The real iffy thing about that episode is its treatment of non-traditional spirituality, especially given the whole theme that the rest of the family is going through the motions of religion and making themselves miserable while Homer's genuinely more interested in religion when he approaches it on his own terms, but then he has to be shut down and told he's got to pick an institution to obey and keep going through the motions with.

Some people were extremely confused by episode 3 of 3 Body Problem because some characters are committing suicide and it doesn't make sense. And the idea that perhaps it's part of an unrevealed mystery is deemed bad writing.
