When I was a little kid, my father begged, borrowed and saved to buy a small factory that made taffy apples. Cost more than $1,500,000. The first year he only made $100,000 in revenue. By the time we were done with high school he had paid off the factory and he was making a nice living every year.

The money that it takes to buy the factory (nvidia chips) is the investment that must be made to make the taffy apples. (Though ironically I believe inference must and will be done on CPU)

We are in minute one of the AI business and the rate of growth of revenue is massive. This article does illustrate who is selling the shovels and making good money at the moment.

Is this what these complete loving idiots actually think?

it's like a candy apple factory- you know- you put money in and... the apples... over time, more apples...

There, fore AI is gonna make a LOT of money

we are going to ignore the obvious fallacy that buying and paying off a small factory to fund the life style of literally one person who owns said factory (while presumably providing a poo poo living to a few more people) is quite a bit different than buying technology that will literally be obsolete in one (1) year like Nvidia chips are, but go off king

Using the analogy of a candy apple factory (basically the definition of old school revenue generation over time) and comparing it directly to quickly obsolete and brain-meltingly expensive AI setups bought because CEOs want to inflate their stock for no reason by using the word "AI" continually in their quarterly reports is about the level of thought process I would expect from these people.

STEM I guess is only going to get you a living wage if you do certain parts of Medicine or technology, and the latter gets more saturated by the day.

I work a lab of mostly female scientists, and I lol at any of the fresh graduates coming in expecting to get rich in a STEM job that isn’t forming your own company a la Venter or being some super hot shot expert in the field.

It’s a sausage toffee apple factory, but for medical and agrochemical compounds.

Had one guy, gift of the gab, basically leave after a couple of years to earn his fortune doing pharma sales. Last I heard he did make a bundle, as he thought he was going to in any role outta uni (“I gots a a degree! That means you legally have to pay me £50k starting!”), but he lost his soul and it killed him inside. He’s now studying medicine at Trinity, so good for him.

$3 billion is low, for such a nascent industry!!! For a site named WSJ they seem to have no understanding on how investment works.

Had never been in a US casino and honestly, was overwhelmed by the garish and inexplicably active digital screens of the newest slots. It was discouraging, mildly confusing (PRESS FOR THIS! PRESS FOR THAT! DO YOU WANT A MULTIPLIER? CHOOSE YOUR PROGRESSIVE!) and not fun. All I wanted was 3 mechanical rings, with numbers and fruit, and a lowish cost per pull with your lap basket of quarter tokens, but no. Not fun in the least even with money to waste.

I know you think it's harsh and cruel (and it is!) but goddamn that's so out of touch with what the rest of us deal with which is so, so very much worse. lol reminds me of the time one of the D&D mods asked another sexual assault victim to write a long new thread/OP about it comparing it to writing a video game walk through write up and then seemed shocked that everyone was REALLY mad about it.

Most of that $3billion is probably OpenAI as well.

Hilariously listening to startup podcasts, I can't get a clear view of what anyone really thinks they can do with LLMs as a large scale buisness. Reading between the lines its their bosses saying they gotta have AI but no idea how it will be used or how applicable it is to their industry.
