This is on two of my pet niche interests (adaptation studies and the 90s mario movie) so I am loving this. The joy of adaptation is seeing something familar with the piquancy of variation and that is what I am feeling while watching this bald man talk about adaptation theory I read for my thesis.

I would go so far to say it's not even necessarily bad. it's flawed, but it's not bad. bad is like a 1-3 out of 10. the live action mario movie is at least a 5 or 6 imo, just because it manages to be interesting and memorable. like turning the mushroom kingdom from what it was into an alternate dimension created by the impact of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs is some inspired poo poo also I love the designs, the goombas, the jump boots, big bertha(DOWN AT THE BOOM BOOM BAR?), bowser being an evil CEO, it's so great there was once a DVD clearance at one of the big bluray/dvd sites years ago(right stuf I think) and they had the mario movie clearanced for like $1.50 each so I bought a bunch of them and for years I'd just include a copy alongside whatever gift I was giving to someone. think I still have a half dozen or so left

Vincent Van Goatse posted:yeah it's ambitiously bad which is way more interesting than blandly competent and safe It's definitely a movie that'd be remembered a lot more fondly and maybe be beloved as a gonzo cult classic like Buckaroo Banzai if it had no Nintendo branding. Or maybe if they hadn't cut the scene Willems talked about where the Marios sell their story to Nintendo - I legit had no clue they shot a scene like that and yeah, that was a stupid thing to cut.

video game movies getting some insane caliber actors is always a fun explanation, like Bloodrayne and Ben Kingsley, who basically made the studio pay for his whole family to join him and turn it into a family vacation he occasionally took time to film scenes during.

The producers really wanted a darker tone (inspired by the recent Batman & TMNT films which were huge hits) so they headscouted the Max Headroom creators Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel to co-direct the film ...... and then right before filming started the distribution rights got bought out by Disney who pressured the producers to make it more kids friendly so they brought in script doctors behind the directors' backs to tear out all the darkest elements and also write out the costliest effects-heavy scenes It was such a clusterfuck Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 09:57 on Apr 1, 2024 |
