Cimber posted:I'm an American who doesn't really have a good grip on the inner workings of your political system. That being said, I understand that a GE needs to be called pretty soon, and the UK economy is currently going down the toilet. Wouldn't it be better for the Conservatives to hold the GE sooner rather than later and force Labour to have to clean up and possibly gently caress up the recovery? Put the economic woes on them as soon as possible and save the Conservative Brand? The UK economy went down the toilet in 2008 and hasn't ever really recovered, it's been weak for the entire time the tories have been in government because their policies are utterly abysmal for it. I don't think it really makes any difference one way or the other what they do, they don't have anything that can stop people thinking they're a useless shower of poo poo in the immediate term and labour's going to gently caress up whatever happens because their policies are essentially identical to the tories except "when we do it it'll work because we're not the tories" As pointed out the tories are essentially hoping for divine intervention and likely to hang on to power as long as they can, while labour are essentially hoping that once they get in there will be such an incredible wave of good vibes and people flashing back to 1997 that nobody will notice that they don't have any actual suggestions except for "well everything the tories do is bad but we won't change any of it" OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 17:10 on Apr 2, 2024 |

What pisses me off the most is that the UK voters would probably elect anyone right now just aslong as it's not tory and the other option is loving Starmer. A gibbon would get elected right now over a tory. But we have loving Starmer!!

Ed would have been gang pressed into doing an EU referendum and would have still lost, quickly been deposed by some right wing poo poo head like Keir Starmer and we'd probably be looking at a role reversal of the current situation but with Sunak in opposition. Press dipshits run this country and they got everything they wanted and the country has gotten progressively worse every time with none of the blame being placed on them.

This happened about 45 mins ago. Had a call from one of my neighbours. There's an old fellow (I guess around early 90s) who collapsed in the bus station adjacent our block. A passer-by had called an ambulance 30 mins before neighbour called me. Neighbour - also just a passerby - said "I need moral support!" so I hobbled outside (leg playing up again) & round to the bus station. It's raining, the old fella is not remotely with it. Standing up hunched over his shopping trolley not responding to any questions or any attempts to get him to sit down (there is a really flimsy bus 'shelter') repeatedly over & over again seemingly to try and get in to a shopping bag. When the first passerby had called an hour previously they said 3 hours. So my neighbour called again & they said 3-5 hours! And he had to keep repeating himself to whoever was answering the 999 - lost count of how many times he explained the old fella was very confused, not responding to any questions (maybe deaf who knows!), doing the same actions repeatedly, getting cold & wet. "Can you take him to hospital" they said. Neighbour doesn't have a car. I don't have a car & can't drive anyway. Nearest A&E is 20 miles away. So neighbour might be stuck outside for 3-5 hours with the old guy until after dark! The bus station is very bleak, there are no more buses today so no more passersby - the rain is persistant, it's getting cold, the old fella is hunched over his shopping trolley, my neighbour just happened to be passing by. I couldn't stay out there as my ankle is still extremely weak & keeps 'going'. (last night I was completely stuck in the middle of the living room for about 15 mins completely unable to move because I couldn't put any weight on my ankle at all and had nothing to hold on to let alone a walking stick - contemplating getting the sword stick out to use as a walking stick because if it goes while I'm in the street, I'll be stuffed!) This is what the tories have done to the NHS & now we're standing there moaning about the crappy Ambulance Service when it's not their fault!

Too much defeatism IMO, there's lots and lots of shite the Tories pushed through that they wouldn't be able to, plus there would also be pressure from the left on Ed. I think he'd be somewhat similar to Gordon Brown maybe, not a socialist but not the worst all things considered. e: There might be less gut bacteria in the rivers for a start. Is there a way to track down Pensions you've paid into over the years? I cannot for the life of me find any information on the pension I was paying into 15 years ago. I cant even remember the company who was running it to try calling them.

We sometimes use "country" to refer to england/NI/scotland/wales despite them not being countries in the sense of having border control. I guess the US equivalent would be states. It's not incorrect just kinda... context dependent.

I suppose if you squint you could say 20 miles is twice that far and 60 quid is almost a hundred? But still seems mighty expensive. Maybe they're could be like a rural zappi (is that what I'm thinking of?) where little far flung villages had a community car people could use for situations like this.
