Symphony of War I found kinda dull since the maps weren't designed well so half your army is just durdling around doing nothing while your god-tier squads sweep the entire map. Maybe the patches fixed this, but it got real boring real fast, and without a decent story or characters to care about, it felt like a slog to complete. There's the foundations of something interesting there, though, so for the price of a bundle, it's probably good enough to play for yourself.

It's solidly mediocre with an actively bad story. The mechanics are interesting, but don't really pan out to be anything meaningful. Nothing changed on that front, although it did get a DLC with some standalone maps and even more busted units.

Unicorn Overlord also came out, even if that's console exclusive, and does the same vibe but in a borderline goty way

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

Neil Newbon was the only actor from the main cast who really had a career in video games before BG3. Besides Astarion he's most known for... you probably guessed it... Heisenberg from Resident Evil Village???

Shadowheart's VA played Latenna in Elden Ring. I knew I recognized her very distinct voice from somewhere.

That means he was also the voice actor for Nicholai in the RE3 remake. That's some pretty impressive range. I knew Heisenberg and Nicholai were the same actor, just didn't know who specifically.

But most of all, you cheated BABA

Heads up, Czech-developed indie 4X Roman thing Aggressors: Ancient Rome is on sale until the 11th. I have no idea if it's good or not yet, but I gotta respect an indie dev going "gently caress it we ball" and putting out a 4X, one of the hardest genres to design.

The Empire Earth 1 menu treatment is strangely enticing.

I think the atmosphere and voice over in Darkest Dungeon is worth 2.50$ and then we get into radiant mode / mods and it becomes one hell of a good game!

You can even get booby with it, if your tastes are indicated by your avatar

Interestingly, the sale makes it so that DD is at the same price as one of its DLCs: The Crimson Court.

Bad Rats doesn't have the extensive collection of horny mods that DD has though.

I'll just stop there and refrain from weighing on whether this is a good or bad thing.

Bad Rats was at least a funny bad thing to gift whereas now if you were gifting someone the worst but cheapest thing you can find on Steam it would probably involve some kind of horrific sex crime.

to be clear i've played like 30ish hours of DD on PS4 and even own a few of the DLCs, but this is across like three false starts. i always peter out when i make some mistake or a lucky crit kills one of my MVPs and then i see the huge low-level dungeon grind just to level another guy up to snuff before me and the desire to continue leaves my body

This is why I appreciated Darkest Dungeon 2 more than the first, but I'm an outlier in that regard. The DarkDun community generally seems to like the first one more.

So far it’s like the old family system, but with the much better sharing policy. My kids haven’t tried to buy anything yet, so I don’t know how that flow appears (I’d like to be able to put it in my library rather than the kid’s, but I don’t know if that’s an option—maybe they can gift it to me?)

We’re all in one house, so haven’t had any trouble with country restrictions, as I understand some others have.

Not necessarily recommending this to you specifically, but the mod class "The Librarian" helps with this, it's (what I recall to be) a decent equivalent to the Antiquarian but for XP instead of money. A weak nerd to drag along to speed up the level grind instead of the money grind.

Darkest Dungeon is definitely something to play more if you enjoy the experience of it all, though, rather than for the desire to progress through it. Because it's designed to occasionally just be an utter shitbird. I'm still salty over the time some goddamn spiders ate my best healer like one room before the end on a boss mission.

The main thing I want to know is if you can share with people without needing to log in on their machine to authorize it, because that was a real drag on the whole system.

Yeah, my daughter got added to my family just via the website on her own. Works fine–though she was previously able to share my library, so it’s possible, though I think unlikely, that you would have to do that step otherwise. I don’t recall anything about logging in a machine or it being limited to specific machines in the instructions.
