Recently I've been on a streak of having a decent game, right until the end, when my team mates suddenly decide to throw themselves against a robot base and waste all our reinforcements before trying for extraction. It gets worse when two people have crashed so it's just me and one other player, who's throwing themselves repeatedly into a robot base and an endless swarm of dropships. They don't seem to comprehend the counter ticking down, or they believe extraction's going to go perfectly, somehow. I suspect it might be because a lot of people are used to fighting bugs, where that kind of thing's easier to pull off

My friends do this, like after they die so many times trying to take out a base it becomes a point of contention and they have to wipe out the rest of the base no matter how many more lives it takes. I end up doing the equivalent of grabbing them by the collar and slapping them in the face once we get down to single digits reinforcements to say we have to move on which usually works but sometimes they stubbornly stay behind while I just leave and start running to the objective/extraction so I can reinforce them away from the base when they die again, lol.

I sometimes play with a group formed by a guy from work and for their level and experience they are way more afraid of higher difficulties than they should be and I just don't have the balls to tell them they get bogged down too much in unnecessary fights. That's why the game is harder for them. They're having fun so it's not on me to poo poo up their good times but it's kind of disheartening to hear them treat ever owning super samples the way I would treat ever owning a yacht.

We did a Bots 7 mission last night having previously given up on 7's for a bit because we were doing the benny hill "run around like chickens with our heads cut off while chain reinforcing towards the objective" bit which wasn't much fun. However, last night was very easy. Like some tough spots for sure but it felt nothing like the 7's we did a week ago. Did the update change bot drop rates or did we just get better/lucky?

I saw one of my IRL buddies online and I jumped on to his ship.

He was still a level 8 and had his girlfriend (level 5) on his ship too. They couldn’t figure out how to change the difficulty and had just gotten back from a traumatizing Difficulty 5 bug mission that they promptly failed.

They were happy to see me and we launched back into a more chill Bug difficulty 4. I called down a Mech and some Guard Dogs for them and we had a fantastic time. I tried to teach them how to use a Hellbomb but they accidentally Orbital Striked the Research Station, which worked anyway.

robots might be overall easier since rockets are no longer one hit kill instant death but the difficulty can just vary to a dramatic degree from mission to mission. i had one session where a random group of pubbies and i streamrolled the map because almost no hulks or tanks spawned, and another session later that day where almost every single bot drop would include at least three or four heavies

I'm probably biased when I say this because I tend to play mainly solo or duo, and you really need a full squad moreso than in other mission types, but the rebalanced escort scientist defence missions still fundamentally suck and I dunno why developers continue to do escort missions in 2024, or why Arrowhead in particular are so fond of these neverending chaos stream of enemies in such tiny arenas.

It's like a crash course in how to remove all the good MGSV tacticool shooter elements from their MGSV tacticool shooter and replace them with a tedious, largely random clusterfuck. Beating the mission brings me no satisfaction because it is always such an irritating, unfun experience all the way through. It also makes me sad that Termicide missions were a flash in the pan because that was a defense mission design that actually made sense to me and had the map scale to allow some breathing room, ebb and flow and tactics.

Not everyone likes the same content. I think the new gunships are rad and cool while others seem less than thrilled about them, but does anyone actually enjoy these missions? How are you framing the experience so that it doesn't feel dumb? Or do you lean into the dumb?

Also did they break the heavy machine gun somehow? It no longer seems to penetrate hulk face, I dumped a whole mag into one at nearly point blank range with the decals showing on the red eye and it did nothing.

You're right, it is cool playing with a full group. I am in the discord and I do play with goons from the Elite: Dangerous goon group often but mostly duos and trios because not everyone's online at the same time. I actually enjoy playing solo because I'm weird, so it's self-inflicted. I realise the game isn't making many concessions for solo play and am totally fine with that, I just frickin' hate escort missions and this one in particular.

At least the scientist missions are over fairly quickly (win or lose). The evac mission on Fire Tornado planet is absolutely heinous because you can end up killing dozens of civilians with absolutely zero counter play.

Pubbies also love dropping mortars on civilians.

Also really enjoyed when a pubbie parked a mech in the path of the civilians and they no longer understood how to route around it. I walk up to move the mech and - you guessed it - it blows the gently caress up and kills me and all the civilians.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

The escort missions on the bug planets aren't bad. You can actually escort the civilians there, running alongside them and just sweeping away anything that gets too close.

The problem is that to fight the bots properly you need to keep them at a distance, break their line of sight, and stay in cover. So of course let's make a mission type where you're being attacked by bots from every side simultaneously, you have to stay in the same spot the whole time, and the arena is tiny.

Like it just fundamentally doesn't work. And if you try to think about how it would "canonically" go, well, yes absolutely the helldivers would just get smoked. The bots have mortars and poo poo that you can't do anything about when you're trapped in the extraction zone. If they wanted to make it fair, they should give us more effective anti-aircraft weapons (heavy CIWS gatling gun sentry that can shoot down dropships? Multi-shot stinger missile launcher? Eagle AA missile strike?) to force the bots to drop further out, giving us a chance to pick them off.

And like what's going on with these civilians only costing 25 credits when they're killed but somehow it's worth losing 15 helldivers to extract them??

You absolutely get the rewards. I am positive about samples and medals. I had just looked to track my samples and was at zero medals before only one of two missions I did yesterday. I crashed on extract but when I reloaded the game I had 22 medals and all the samples.

I cannot 100% safe or share that I got the experience and requisition, because I'm capped on req and who keeps track of exp numbers? But if I had to bet I'm pretty sure I got them too.

I don’t explicitly hate them and think there’s some fun to be had with the chaos but both the small defense and eradicate missions are way way less interesting than the 40 minute missions. The larger maps with a bunch of objectives give you way more of a chance to interact with the actual fun parts of the game, which “how well can I cheese or overpower spawning logic” is not one of. The search and destroy blitz missions are a nice change of pace, I wish they had just stuck to those when it came to offering a shorter mission type.

Recoil Reduction armor doesn't make it feel much better. It's designed for a Helldiver to setup a stationary position, then fire. But it doesn't have the ammo capacity to justify it. Like maybe if you could have a teammate do a fast assist reload it'd be a different story. But it mostly feels like bad middle ground between the MG and AC, because at least with those you have a 3rd person reticle and a correctly aligned red dot.
