I think to alot of them, trumps a fandom because he has all the stuff they love and makes them feel important again and to get away for bordom of retirement or boring/lovely jobs, they buy into it.

I've spent the last hour or so down the monkey torture network rabbit hole, read that BBC piece and listened to most of an interview with a couple of the lead investigators, and I'm honestly glad I did. For all the shock at learning this poo poo goes on, anger that it continues to go on, dismay at discovering an exciting new way humanity can utterly suck rear end, etc., it was so empowering and encouraging to learn that a lot of the work to bust this ring was done by amateurs. These people waded into a total fuckin cesspool of the soul and did it of their own volition and on their own time and without making a dime, because they're good people. The BBC acted responsibly and diligently in their investigation too. Together they made the world a little better. I'm taking the whole thing as a timely reminder that even in these dark times there are still really good people out there, and sometimes they win a little.
