Really, based on what? I don't get where that take is coming from at all

quote:

There was an old dude next to me at the cinema who kept expressing outrage every time someone did something dumb or took drugs and it honestly made the entire thing better. At one point he leaned over to me and offered me the rest of his Oreos. I declined, and then he turned back to his wife and said "I told you he doesn't want them!" loud enough for the entire cinema to hear. They should make that dude come to all the LLB screenings.

That owns

Never seen T&L but I'd compare LLB favorably to Showgirls (one of Verhoeven's best imo)

I was mostly thinking of this exchange from near the end:

"Baby, I can't stop murdering people."
"There's nothing wrong with you."

Which got a huge laugh from me and a few other people, and a contemptuous scoff from Oreo Grandpa.

Generally I was surprised by how much of a black comedy it escalated into being, which did not come across from the trailers at all.

Sure that's technically validation, but it's not in the context of, like a socio-political debate where someone's saying "I see you I hear you're valid" or w/e, it's in the context of of an experienced murderer comforting her noob girlfriend.

Absolutely agree that it's a very funny movie, on top of being chilling and beautiful and grotesque. I fist pumped and shouted yes!! when Ed Harris ate that beetle

The third season of Righteous Gemstones fails on a basic narrative level. Episode 2 is great, the one that ends on "we, the three and you". It's so satisfying to see the siblings in a bind because their own character flaws drive off the deacons/assistant pastors. How will they recover?

They'll recover by completely forgetting there was ever a problem. The rest of the season is a kidnapping/militia plot. The writers craft a great despicable character (Peter), a right-wing leader willing to sell out his compatriots. Peter is offered redemption through death, but lives and so negates any sacrifice. The producer had access to dirtbikes and was determined to use them.

Kevin and Keefe's kiss was cathartic but their sudden self-reflection on tolerance was lame. "Gay male anti-pornography activists" is a great bit that could only exist in modern evangelicalism, and the writers throw it away in favor of across-the-board liberalism.

I can't tell if the final celebratory scenes are satirical. The force-ghost Mom only confuses things.

Christ on the Cross. They massacred my boys.

I've been wondering this -- and this is probably really out there in a film that's already really out there -- but the running joke with the rugs, and the giant crack in the desert filled with dead bodies... did you get the sense that the climax where she gets big was gonna play out uhhh a little differently for Ed Harris?

I've only seen gemstones S1 but in it McBride and his wife are incredibly excited to have a gay son, the characters have always been lib evangelicals

Yea lol it's the only real missed opportunity in the film, but it's only Rose Glass' 2nd feature so I'm still impressed. Gonna have to check out St Maud now

making him swallow a gun barrel till the corners of his mouth bleed is still p satisfying tho

Did the U-2 spyplane get immediately shot out of the sky on its first mission or is "Bridge of Spies" lying to me? I thought this was a cool plane that took lots of pictures, but this idiot in the movie got shot out of the sky before taking a single picture and didn't even hit the self-destruct button. He also didn't kill himself with the poisoned needle hidden in the dollar coin.

No.
It was shot down because they kept using the same flight path and the Soviets got to play a minigame.
The U2 was pretty successful (at the time) of doing it's job, which was flying so high the Missiles and interceptors couldn't reach it. The missile could only reach it if you flew directly on top of it, and after flying this path a few times the soviets managed to time it right.

why is Miles Teller getting pushed on us so hard

it's like Shia Labouf or Josh Hartnett

he's fine but like... stop putting him in leading roles, it doesn't work
he does not have that raw charisma that makes you want to root for him

like in Whiplash, that'd be a totally different movie if he was innately likable but instead you're just like "gently caress yeah, roast that idiot, JK Simmons"

He needs to be a lil unlikeable in Whiplash tho, the character is the type of person who when faced with the choice between getting pussy and being 1% better at Jazz Drumming chooses the latter.
