Is there a news outlet or Twitter account or something that says, "this game between mediocre-to-bad teams is very important to seeding and probably won't suck poo poo"? I would like not to have to cross-reference the standings every night.

Dallas Mavericks: Generations

Lockback posted:

That trade would make the Mavs better but I am not sure that its how they should push their chips in. Randle is a risk and if they are going to commit with Kyrie then they probably need something a little different than Randle.

Randle's contract is better than CP3's for a contending team because CP3 is actively falling off a cliff and Dallas is already over the cap enough it's not like CP3 expiring means they get to sign some other $30m guy in FA (and I don't know who Dallas would get).

Outside of the bigs (Lively and Lively Gafford), Exum is the most important role player this season for Dallas. Whenever the Mavs are at their best this season, Exum is typically playing an important role as the offense's third point guard and Lively/Gafford feast on lobs. Jason Kidd's offense needs a third point guard to actually work. Exum is the only bench player who can fill that roll on the Dallas roster. If Exum can look great on the Mavs, so can old CP3. The Mavs offense is still prone to fall off a cliff when they don't have Kyrie or Luka on the floor. CP3 would keep the offense flowing for the bench unit and would work well as the 3rd guard in crunch time. He'd have to be replaced relatively quick but I think he would work better with the team as constructed than Randle. He also would be serving in a super sub role vs being a featured player. They wouldn't be able to sign another free agent after CP3 expired sure, but this team's window is closing. Kyrie will likely fall off within a couple of years. Also, Randle can't handle pressure. When fans returned to games during the pandemic, iirc his fg% dropped the most. Randle's looks on offense would likely slow down the team and take away from the Lively/Gafford dunk fest. CP3 would only improve the Lively/Gafford dunk fest.

CP3 simply fits better with the Mavs and they are in win now mode. Kyrie is 32. They basically need to win a title before Kyrie turns 34 or their window closes. (unless Green or Hardy turned into a reliable scorer, this would likely require a new coach.)

CP3 is alright I guess but he's like the 5th or 6th most important player on a team that might not make the play-in. I don't think he moves the needle for the Mavs like you think, even if they do need a steady handed playmaker off the bench.

He's basically a novelty 2nd round pick at best.

Where is planning he going to transfer to anyways? He needs to play serious minutes and I don't think most high seed teams are going to have him start.

I read an anonymous GM perspective on him a few weeks ago and it wasn’t very positive about his draft prospects.

https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/39719406/2024-nba-draft-nba-executives-bronny-james-future?consent_mode=ccpa

quote:

NBA exec: We would recommend Bronny go back to college

I'll be honest, we didn't have huge expectations for [Bronny] heading into the season. I know some mocks had him as a top-20 pick, but our group didn't view him as a player of that caliber. I don't know exactly what his role is going to be, and I think it's hard to project him in a half-court setting. He doesn't have great separation off the bounce, he's not a really good perimeter shooter, so it's going to be tough to unlock some of the creation, because I don't think teams are going to get up on him defensively. They'll probably allow him some space [until he proves it]. I think it's going to be more of a defensive bet, and it's more of a wing profile. I think he'll struggle with some of the quicker guards, he dies on some screens, it's a work in progress.

NBA exec: 'I don't know what he does at an NBA level'

If he goes back, I think he'll have a better year, because hopefully his health is fully stabilized and he can have a full year of training and focus, and maybe the expectations are lowered so he can just play. I think that could be really helpful. I don't know that it changes his trajectory that much, but he'll have a better year I'd imagine. He's not a bad player at all, there's a lot of good things about him, but there are weaknesses, too, with height, stature. He can playmake, but it's tough, I don't know what he does at an NBA level that really moves the needle. It's got to be the shooting ability and the defensive stuff.

NBA exec: 'I feel bad a little bit' for Bronny

When I saw him, I was very much like, this is going to be a smart role player who maybe has an NBA future off being some version of a defense-first, smart-passer wing. And he doesn't have great size, so it's going to have to be off IQ and skill. At his best, that's what he looked like.

If he goes undrafted and goes back to college he doesn't need to re-enter the draft and just just sign anywhere later, right? That seems like maybe his desired outcome if so.

Assuming Lebron doesn't retire, seems like the Lakers would pick him up with a late second round pick if only for the press that will come out of the first time a father/son played on an NBA team together.
