Is that a human running the arc (or whatever it is), or is it automated and the human just taps the welding rod? I honestly have no idea,, but it's fascinating to watch.

I used to with with a dude who would set up a mirror and weld behind a pipe, somehow still making it perfect. I can barely brush my teeth while looking in the mirror.

So like, is there a way I can stick my phone to the inside of a welding helmet and run a special USB camera to the outside, and get a realtime feed that looks anywhere near that good? I'm a wiz at soldering, but sucked at welding when I tried because I couldn't see poo poo.

The real answer is to get a welding helmet with adjustable, auto-darkening glass. If it's too dark, try turning it up a shade or two. Welding is all about getting the right angle between the workpiece, the torch, and your face, and oftentimes your face is going to lose out. Move your body into a better position if you need to. Sometimes your view just sucks and you gotta develop instincts for what the puddle should be doing. For example, I was working on a project over the winter that had a bunch of easy to see weld joints and a handful of pain in the rear end joints. I did the easy welds first, turned on extra light, got my machine dialed in, adjusted the shade in my helmet, etc until it was all automatic. Then I knew how the puddle and the bead were going to behave in the hard to see joints, so I was able to lay down good welds without being able to see the puddle really well. Of course, it was flux core MIG, so the process was a lot simpler than TIG. Safety Dance fucked around with this message at 07:35 on Apr 6, 2024 |

Just get a nice autodarkening helmet and maybe clip in some cheater magnifying lenses? I hear the 3m speedglas line is the poo poo, but too expensive for my blood. My hobart is pretty nice for the money, fwiw

Non Compos Mentis posted:what does the stick do? it melts typically when welding you need some extra metal to fill in the gap between the two bits you're welding together. so you use the welder to melt a little puddle at the contact point, then dip the filler rod into it to give it that little bit of extra metal it needs.
|
# ? Apr 6, 2024 09:33 |

contrast that with mig welding, where your filler material is the metal wire you're using as an electrode, and you don't need a separate filler rod.
