The first time I did that elf -> forge escort, I didn't realize they were following me at first, so I just immediately used a ferrystone to Bakbattahl, and she went with me.

Make sure you're actually in an area where you can ferrystone out of, otherwise I'm not sure! I generally just pick up the NPC and teleport away.

I did, my closest portcrystal was still a ways north of bakbattahl.

I wandered around the whole city and when I went into the jail the guards suddenly aggroed and threw me in jail, unlike the vernworth guards who didn't care about me walking around their jail. I then unlocked the jail door with a key right in front of them, strolled past them a ways, and all my gear materialized back into my inventory. I ran further and ended up in the forbidden magic lab, whereupon the guards were cool again and I could chat them up. after running around the lab for awhile, they suddenly aggroed again. they chased me back to the hallway and since I had the spearhand invincibility shield I just killed them all without anything they could do about it. all the researchers in the lab and everyone in the city is still cool with me, so I looted the place top to bottom. when I left through a different way than the jail, I ran past a guard who said not to try slinking in.

I came across an interesting quest reaction for the Myrddin quest. If you already did Trysha's stuff and got Meteoron (or more specifically you just have Meteoron, in my case from NG+) Myrddin notices and gets mad at you if you either don't tell him who taught you or reveal it was Trysha, and doesn't teach you Maelstrom.

But if you're wearing Trysha's ring, he instead spends some time reflecting on his relationship with Trysha and afterwards still teaches you Maelstrom.

Is there even a stealth system or whatever? Literally the only time I had guards attack me was when sneaking into Allard's room for evidence and there was a guard inside.
Other than that I could always freely walk around literally anywhere else.

Because while the combat, the pawn system, and the general atmosphere in this game is great, everything else is extremely half-baked.

I wouldn't bother putting any of my limited portcrystals anywhere you've uncovered so far, except maybe Elftown if you feel like it's a place you're going to be visiting often (because you like their vendor's unique selection of items, for example).

For most of the game I think I only had three portcrystals, until I did the sphinx riddles. I put one in Bakbattahl* permanently, another permanent one in the Volcanic Island Camp, and the last one was a wildcard that I usually lugged around with me to temporarily put in a place where, for example, I wanted to grind a specific enemy or that I had to visit multiple times for a quest. That seemed to work fine for me. Pretty much anywhere else you can get to pretty quickly by running or taking the oxcart, if you don't mind wading through dozens of trash mobs on the way there.

* this is probably the big one, absolutely make sure you have a portcrystal on you or in storage when you first visit this place

No. It operates according to the first game's logic, where guards may or may not attack you when they see you trespassing, and it doesn't have permanent consequences if they do anyway.

I even carried the guard away down the hall and around the corner and made sure nobody else was around, and he still aggroed so I think it was just scripted to happen if you open the cell.

Yeah I don't think enemies have vision. It's just proximity and triggers. Same with the noble in the checkpoint town, who'll run from far away if open his office door, but won't care if he sees you jump to the balcony and enter that way.

It is fascinating the details put in to avoid clipping errors in some cases, while having traditional "It is a cape/hanging on your back item, don't worry about it" mega clipping in others.

I JUST finally realized that my early game guardian plate armor (Fighter or Warrior), removes all the plate metal from the elbow down on one side if you equip a shield, leaving a bare forearm and leather glove.

That is such a neat detail, now I am wondering how many suits of armor edit themselves based on your equipment or not.

A bunch of them remove shoulder and upper chest bits if you're equipping a mantle or scarf style neck slot armor vs a cape. Comparing that to the way capes just sorta clip through everything really does speak to uneven dev time and resources.

I concur with others who think that, while it’s tough to recommend without reservation to DD-naive friends, it is weirdly compelling. Immediately started another run.

I can’t say I enjoyed fighting the beacon bosses. The melee fun sweet spot, IMO, is mid-sized creatures. Less camera weirdness, and bite-sized fight length.

E: in addition to DA goodness, I’d kind of like to see some sort of player homestead system added.

And a fishing mini game. I just… this world feels right for a fishing mini game.

The camera issues really do get kind of significant when trying to fight Drakes in melee in my experience. I don't think that's a camera issue, because I'm pretty sure that the climbing controls are not camera-relative. They seem to be character-relative or something, because they're really strange even when camera is static.

It might have just been the exact timing was I saved her husband from being cucked to death, she killed the rear end in a top hat, and then immediately after telling me that I find she's been in my house and is down bad.

I think you can reasonably make the trek to get it by level 20 or so (you could technically do it earlier, but it'd be pretty tough and probably involve a lot of running away from enemies).

I'd wait until you get a spare portcrystal, though, so you can stick one on the Volcanic Island. I was mad at myself for forgetting to bring one when I did the blacksmith one where you have to rescue the girl, since I now have to make the trip again (though since it's NG+ I can also open the north way early, which I think is a little faster).

Yeah from what I can tell, "up" means "towards the monster's head". The problem is there are some spots where you can kind of get stuck because the game has a funny way of interpreting which direction that is when crossing a threshold of different body parts.
