After my dear grandma departed I finally took a good look and yep, only cheap dreck that consumerist society pushed on low-middle class people who wanted to feel fancy. We couldn't give most of it away. E: also the old man I bought my apartment from had in addition lots of those fake USSR medals and memorabilia made for tourists. The one two combo of “growing up in the Great Depression” and “starting a middle class family in the late 50s” really did them in. A friend of mine used to go to thrift stores when she was just out of college and buy fine china sets and use them like regular plates, into the dishwasher and everything. If they broke, she'd just go buy a new set. You could get them for around $20-40 for a full set easily.

Gotta have a hard boiled egg slicer and an oven dish with a spike in the middle for roasting a whole pineapple.

My mom has a small and undistinguished china and silverware set that has been languishing in an antique buffet for fifty years. She used to speak of it as if it was all a significant monetary asset, like a country estate. She's gone now and I can't see myself saving any of it, and it's probably not worth anything. My toxic trait is wanting a China hutch full of that poo poo. I don't even care if it's mass produced poo poo from the thrift store. I just want to eat taco bell off a fancy rear end plate

My parents married in the 1970s, a decade when everyone was drunk all the time and throwing terrible dinner parties was the height of sophistication. They had a horrible drinks cabinet that took up an entire corner of the living room, full of half drank bottles of weird 70s booze that was still in there long after is had probably turned to literal poison. Plus of course the mandatory pineapple-shaped ice bucket.

I have some china from my parents but I think my mom bought them because she liked the patterns on them. They sat in the china cabinet next to her Disney souvenirs. She used the tea cup to store the pinbacks.

My mom taught me to make gin and tonics for her. My parents were also coffee enthusiasts and when I was a little kid they bought a cast iron hand grinder and I had to grind the beans so I could get a pot going in their Mr. Coffee machine. They got a lot of labor out of me! It's also funny that I grew up to be someone who doesn't drink alcohol or coffee.

All the Swedish thrift stores are full of stemmed shot glasses and sets of mocha coffee cups with saucers. No one wants to do shots of vodka with formal dinner and serve twelve guests small amounts of coffee anymore.
