Shadow of the Erdtree is going to be GOTY and it won't even be close, but Balatro and Helldivers 2 will be competing hard for second place for sure imo FF7 Rebirth doesn't even have a steam page yet so I doubt it's gonna come out this year

It might come out this year but definitely not on Steam. Squeenix has some sort of deal with Epic so even when it comes out on PC it's probably gonna be Epic exclusive for a while.

Best game of the year is going to be whatever comes out that deeply emotionally resonates with me or blows my mind in some profound way because loving around with a well made toy feels kind of wack in comparison to like Kentucky Route Zero rending my soul in twain by the time it was over. One of the big reasons why imo Grim Fandango is one of the greatest games ever made. Pulls you into its world, is genuinely funny, is genuinely sad, and by the end you wish you never had to leave the experience behind because the place it took you to was so fascinating and filled with so many characters you just wanted to keep spending time with. All of that, and the gameplay is doing inane puzzles with poo poo tank controls lol. Give me that any day over some poo poo I'll just forget 90% of in the next 6 months.

Zachtronics games are some of my favs and Dyson Sphere Program/Factorio rule, but those have actual problem solving elements to them, versus like adventure game puzzles supposedly making you "think."

It's been elden ring month in my house, playing modded co-op elden ring with my brother. It's been "a blast" Here's imo the neatest, smartest thing the mod we're using (elden ring reforged) does: After you upgrade a weapon to the maximum possible level for each given upgrade material, that upgrade material immediately becomes available to purchase, allowing your non-main weapons to painlessly keep up

One of my all-time favorites, my forever game, Besiege, is unexpectedly getting an expansion pack out of the blue in just over a month. Going to add ocean-based siege engineering jank goodness to an already pretty great game. Particularly cool that it's not just still water, but like, roiling ocean physics mechanics. What game was it semi-recently that was the most egregious form of that? It was a war FPS or something that had like 2-3Mb of files on a DVD/blu-ray and you had to download the other 40-50Gb+ off the net. Absolutely beyond wasteful behaviour.
