The other way to think about, and be annoyed about, AI art and AI in general is that it's just the new fad. It's Cloud Computing. It's Crypto. It's NFTs. It's WEB3.0. It's the Metaverse. It's AR/VR/XR. It's just the current "thing" in a long list of bullshit "things" that have taken hold of the tech sector as they chase the next iPhone, the next PC, the next Internet, and on and on and on.

Cryptocurrencies and NFTs have minimal appreciable use. AR/VR/XR is a gimmick. Unrestrained (e.g., not as part of an artist's workflow) AI art is pretty universally sludge, for sure. But there's significant differences between both "AI in general" and cloud computing and everything else on your list. Unrestrained GPT gimmick poo poo is one output from the current AI boom, but so is how suddenly speech-to-text has gotten really good because OpenAI Whisper is freely available and runs on a five-year-old GPU or on your phone. Or for applications like software development which--while absolutely blind-alleying novices, and that needs to be acknowledged--have pretty rapidly doubled my hands-on-keyboard output as a software developer with a measurable increase in quality. And with regards to cloud computing, lowering the gate to being able to throw bulletproofed solutions at problems--with the very real long-term problems for projects that do; eventually the variable costs do outpace the alternative fixed+variable costs of not using AWS--have made a lot of cool stuff possible because VPS providers aren't handing you best-practices tools out of the gate. (Also horrors--but so did the internet, and yet we are here.)

I think it's important to differentiate between poo poo you don't like and poo poo with no/minimal practical use. AI as a tool in the toolbox, and definitely cloud compute, are the former. The others, pretty reasonably the latter.

todd wanted to write spider man and there was no way marvel was going to replace an actual writer with a man who cant write on their flagship series so to appease him they gave him his own spider man comic to write and i dont remember the plot if it even had one lol

The only two story arcs he wrote were one with the Lizard controlled by Kraven the Hunter's heretofore unknown voodoo girlfriend and the other Spidey teaming up with Wolverine to fight The Native American Monster Known For Cannibalism and is the reason we got Wolverine back to his original blue and yellow costume because he decided to wear it again because he wore it in his first appearance fighting TNAMKFC and just never went back, even after Todd left the company.

If it was made in the early 2000's, it'd be a goofy movie with an absurd premise that would clumsily try and have a heart and message of acceptance. It would NOT have aged well, but you could've remembered it fondly and when you looked at it again you would've cringed at the language and stereotypes but it'd have a nice speech in there somewhere about being yourself no matter what the world thinks about it. Or the point of the movie would've been that the dudes underestimated the women in basketball and they learned to appreciate their skills. Something. It would've had something in there, because it would be released to mainstream audiences.

But it's a movie made in 2023 by conservatives, so it's a hateful mess that only monsters can enjoy. By Monsters, For Monsters. That's the Shapiro Promise™.

the funniest part of ladyballers is

quote:

The premise of Lady Ballers originated as a potential documentary in which men would pretend to be transgender and attempt to integrate women's sports, but The Daily Wire changed the concept to a fictional comedy after failing to find any men who would agree to undergo the necessary requirements for trans women to participate on women's teams.

our attempts to make this completely disproved our point? well well make it anyway

He said in an interview that he's not a heart surgeon, but that he does work in healthcare. and all the way back in 2019 he had spent... I think $98,000 total on macro commissions? At this point he's probably approaching $200,000 spent.

it kind of seems to hate everyone. like all the men in it come off pathetic, petty, and condescending, even when they're meant to have their redemptive moment. it just represents a woldview thats fundamentally incompatible with like, humanity.

like even in terms of badly aged trans humor that you can read as hateful, there's a pretty clear difference between something thats having a laugh and something that seems alternately terrified and vengeful.

also yea this guy makes a point also like, why do you need an ai to generate sexy pictures of tifa lockhart? there's already 50000. what could you possibly need thats so hyperspecific that it doesnt already exist. thats the most annoying part about ai art, its best at generating stuff that a ton of stuff already exists of. like if youre really into some lady from an obscure 90s anime that 5 people have seen and barely any fanart exists of, the ai cant make art of her cause it doesnt have a ton of art of her in its database. so it just has no practical usecase

AI porn seems specifically targeted at people who suck so bad that no artist is willing to work for them. No matter how dark, outlandish or hyper-specific the fetish, there's an artist out there who is willing to draw that for money. This technology is for people who are incensed at the idea that an artist wants to be paid to draw their weird fetish, or who is outraged that a specific artist won't draw certain scenarios, or finds the idea that they have to subscribe to an artist's Patreon to access some of their material personally insulting, or they are just such a generally lovely client that word's gotten around and none of the artists in the niche community for their kink are willing to work with them anymore. At the end of the day, AI art is just technology for people who hate artists...

Not only that but a belief that art just doesn't have value. There's plenty of people that think if they can't do a thing then it must therefore be worthless and they should therefore be allowed to have it for free.
