Bullfinch is called Dompap in all of Scandinavia, the name is borrowed from German Dompape, which I think is the word for a bishop or another highranking member of the clergy, who were dressed in red clothes. Dom comes from domus/domini, which is latin and means the house of the Lord. It is still used in German to name cathedrals, for instance Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). In Scandinavia the word for cathedral is domkirke/domkyrka.

They come in different colours because they were bred to be in different colours. Without humans, they would mostly be black or dark brown. Just like panthers, really. People could in theory breed panthers to be all sorts of colours, too.
