steph is a senator now, I don't know how many people were voting for the familiar face vs the triangle but there might be some changes to first prefs, plus labor incumbent seems to be not a total poo poo (notwithstanding the shittier choices of his govt)

Any assumption that Israel/Palestine is a seat-deciding issue, resulting in Wills becoming a lock for the Greens, presumably has to lead to the opposite conclusion for Macnamara

labor & liberal attacks on the greens in macnamara have focused on their position on israel/palestine for many elections now, so there are going to be very very few previous greens voters in macnamara who have only suddenly realised they disagree with the greens on israel/palestine. to win macnamara, the greens only need there to be a very small swing against labor - it doesn't matter whether it goes to the liberals or to the greens, either would mean the greens finish ahead of labor and win via labor preferences. the part of the seat with a large jewish population is the part that's by far the strongest for the liberals too.

this is all very different to wills which is a straight labor/greens contest, the libs are very firmly third there (but their preferences generally favour labor which means the greens need a sizeable primary lead). a large labor-to-greens swing is needed but that is never going to be more achievable than next election.

quote:

Peter Dutton has drawn widespread criticism, including from one of his own MPs, for comparing the 1996 mass murder of 35 people at Port Arthur to a pro-Palestine protest at the Sydney Opera House.

Tasmanian Liberal backbencher Bridget Archer labelled Dutton’s comments “incredibly disrespectful” and “wholly inappropriate”.

The MP for Bass, who is known for speaking out against the party line on important issues, told Guardian Australia the example used in the opposition leader’s speech on Wednesday night went too far.

“[Dutton’s comments were] incredibly disrespectful to the victims and survivors of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history and a wholly inappropriate and somewhat bizarre comparison,” Archer said.

quote:

The Liberal leader then compared the 9 October pro-Palestine protests outside the Sydney Opera House last year to the Port Arthur massacre, which led to tougher gun laws in Australia, while blaming Labor politicians’ “moral equivalence” for rising antisemitism.

“While no one was killed during the 9 October protests, the events at the Sydney Opera House were akin to a Port Arthur moment in terms of their social significance,” Dutton said.

Are the ABS usually pricks to deal with? I've had to deal with them at work this week and they've been loving rude about some surveys they want done. It's not like I'm sitting around twiddling my thumbs waiting for a survey to do, but some fuckwit kept talking over the top of me about how if I didn't complete this poo poo we'd be breaking the Census Act and the Statistician General or someone would write a letter demanding the info.
