Children of Men is grim but eminently rewatchable. Now The Seventh Continent, that's a movie that'll put hair on your chest*. *make you want to die **seriously, do not watch if you have any ideation going on. funny picture

Humphreys posted:I literally broke things in my house in anger after the bombshell in that one. I hear that. I've seen most of the movies on the list in this derail, but Dear Zachary is the one that hit me the hardest because it is a documentary (and because of the turn in the middle). It's not a spoiler to say that the premise of the movie itself is gut-wrenching from the first minute, way before the hard turn. I've recommended it to a few friends but I always do so with ample, no jokes content warnings, and I do the same here to anyone reading this.

The funny thing (Well, maybe not haha funny) is that Grave of the Fireflies was not supposed to be an anti-war movie. Death of the author and all that, but the creator meant it as a message to the youth of Japan of the time, who were considered selfish, materialistic and disrespectful, to tell them "This is what your parents and grandparents went through, show some respect you little fucks."

I read that he showed them being dead or dying first with the intention that you'd know how it'd end and focus on everything else. Didn't work my dude!! Still cried a lot!! Also I took the ending to mean the ghosts of wartime Japan figuratively haunt modern japan so that tracks

That's a claim I've also heard, but it seems to be untrue. I can't say for sure, though. From what I understand, this post goes into greater detail on his anti-war and anti-conformity stances. https://web.archive.org/web/20150818054904/http://www.kanaloco.jp/article/72742 Google translate posted:Young people will say, ``Read the atmosphere.'' I feel hopeless when I hear these words. I think we Japanese people haven't changed at all from what we used to be. It is good to cooperate with those around you, but this word is not asking for cooperation, but conformity. Keeping pace has become an absolute value. Japanese people have traditionally disliked conflict of opinion. Make everyone your friend, maintain a friendly atmosphere and avoid conflict. Meetings are based on unanimity, and if all else fails, they will be ostracized. They don't like the effort of establishing themselves as individuals, recognizing the differences between people with whom they have different opinions, and then trying to get along. Don't argue. This long-established constitution led Japan to step into the quagmire of war.

Meema and Peepa are long gone but they’re still in our hearts for a couple hours when the family has a sit down after the meal. Which is totally vegan because meat is murder.
