Right, by refining I mean scraping more and more pre-2022 data. I'm sure there are all sorts of print sources that could be digitized and incorporated, probably lots of existing digital text that hasn't been used yet, etc. They could "perfect" that pre-2022 model and maybe it would be pretty nice and useful. But it would also be frozen in time, and eventually it would be incredibly out of sync with how people actually think and communicate. I'm really just having fun with the idea of a supercomputer that mankind knows is significant but can no longer understand.

It's a question of cost-effectiveness and access.

Taking something that is in print but is not currently able to be scraped by bots is possible but where is that coming from? If they're getting the entire print run of a given newspaper and having a team in India or wherever scan it, there's a real cost associated with that labor and the company that owns that data is gonna want to be paid for it.

That's why Reddit is so jealously guarding their data from AI bots, it's probably the last big, high quality data set out there that could meaningfully improve AI models, but to give you an idea of scales here, even the entirety of all Reddit posts ever is only enough for incremental improvements. Think about how much it would take, just in labor, to get that much data by scanning and digitization of other content.

OpenAI definitely scraped all of reddit before reddit wised up and locked it down

Turned out that the aliens looked exactly like bored apes and that was an attempt at soft disclosure. The reaction to them was so negative and those who liked them so chudilly that disclosure was moved back 87 months.

i’m cleaning out cupboards and other things at the moment and stumbled across a lot of old photos i took close to 20 years ago from a reusable film camera. i remember i took a photo from 2001 looking directly up through pine trees of a silver tic tac. i didn’t see it when i took the photo, only when i got them developed. i remember i scanned the photo and saved it on a long gone computer but i can’t find the original :gonk:

Aren't Dyson marketing their latest £300000 hairdryer as having AI in it because it knows when to turn the temperature down? Thermostats???? how the gently caress do they work?

Edit:

quote:

Dyson’s new Nural™ sensors activate Scalp protect mode, Attachment learning and Pause detect – all which help to make styling easier.

Scalp protect mode protects scalp health
In this mode, heat is automatically reduced to 55°C, the optimum temperature for scalp comfort and drying speed, as the hair dryer gets closer to hair and scalp. A time of flight sensor enables this, by projecting an invisible infrared beam to measure the distance between the machine and your hair.

Could've just used a thermostat there chief.

Oh absolutely, I presume every AI company did and this is as good as they could get with it. They're still sitting on a massive pile of new data from after the lockdown that is as scrubbed of AI as anything could reasonably be thanks to the army of volunteer moderators. Obviously there's gonna be a bunch of AI poo poo in there, but much less than the average web scrape these days.

The tweet Lue is replying to is a great example of the governments current strategy working. As I keep screaming into the void, this rash of "drones" that he is referencing are very obviously not human in origin when you go through the stories and apply some logic but the military continues to refer to them as that so dummies like this see Mellon tweeting all the stories and think he is pivoting to drones when it's really just more UAP.
