Today Brisket got some in home training which he did pretty well with. Marking and treating so that he knows good things happen when he sees the scary things, like this tiny woman who came to the house. Or the six month infant who can crawl. Everything was going good until she turned to leave and he started lounging at her. I guess Brisket thinks he's in prison

As far as the leg, she probably just pulled a muscle if she was running around like a maniac, is she still limping today? My dog had a similar incident a few days ago but I gave him a quick leg massage and it must have just been a cramp or something becuase he was totally fine afterwards, as soon as I saw him lifting his leg up I was like "God not another loving vet visit" because we just spent like 2 grand on some teeth pulling. She's not limping at all today. She's been fine luckily so was just a pulled muscle by the looks of it, will be keeping an eye on her. My Partner did her phone snatched today while we was out though so we're having a great time right now.

Hoping that Freya is back to 100% soon. Newton continues to be a good boy. He had hookworm but got treated for it and they’ll check again at his next vet appointment. He came to Easter, everybody loved him except my cousins ornery ancient pitbull who decided he was too close to the kids when all the kids walked up to him and ripped out some of his neck fur. Newton was unfazed and still wanted to try to be buddies with the pitbull. I was very much fazed. He has a favorite toy which is a big knotted rope, his very favorite game was to attack and chew on the leash when it was time to go inside (partly because it was fun, partly because he didn’t want to go inside), so I got him to redirect his violence to the rope. It’s the first thing he really loves to tug, grab, and thrash around like a mace and club me in the shins with. Neeeeeyow zoom snap chomp https://i.imgur.com/4W6dAV5.mp4

I'm proud of Newton for you tbh, if he had a pitbull take some hair out and it didn't bother him at all that's kinda huge. Shows how good of a job you're doing with him. Freja is every much on the mend. She's finished her antibiotics now but I think it may not be enough. Im going to see how she is for the next couple of days and maybe call the vets again but she is much better than she was. No more coughing, wheezing and her temp is almost back to normal now too

Does anyone have experience with Hypoallergenic dog foods? We just switched Freja as per the Vet and trying to narrow down what was going on with her... However, her poops are giving me concern. They went from regular and healthy looking to yellow/green and very wet, to half as often, maybe once a day and very, very hard. She's not constipated, but I think she may be getting there and I'm wondering if it's something that's somewhat normal with these types of food?.. I'm gonna give it a few more days as it's only been a week so far and it's still not leveled out yet but if it gets worth it I'm gonna be calling the vet again on Monday.

Did you switch cold turkey? That can cause problems till the dog gets adjusted to the new food.

Solid poops are good, as long as your dog doesn't have any trouble passing them and you're making sure she has plenty of water. Regular cheap/consumer foods are fluffed with a lot of semi-digestible trash that makes for big soft poops, probably what you're seeing is normal healthy dookie.

Welp, our 18 year old deaf, senile Chihuahua is scheduled for an eye removal tomorrow morning. His remaining eye is 90% blind already. It's no surprise, because he's spent a lifetime abusing his eyes, running them into things. It was just a matter of time before he went fully blind. Anyone got advice for caring for a blind, deaf, old dog? He still loves cuddles and eating, so we're not in any hurry to put him down, which is both a blessing and a curse I suppose. His dumb rear end will probably live another 5 years to inconvenience us as much as possible.

if he's like my elderly schnauzer who also can't see any more, he may have problems recognizing where he is and where he needs to go/how to get there for things like water and the dog door if you have one so you have to be kind of proactive to that, coax him/carry him to water from time to time just to make sure he's not doing the stoic dog thing they do and hiding how bad off he is.

From 2005 to 2022 I had a mini dachshund named Milo. We had family dogs before him but he was the first that was just mine. I was 19 and I got him from my mom for christmas. It's almost been 2 years (July) since he's been gone. I needed healing time, but I knew I wanted another dog eventually, another mini wiener. The past few weeks I've been checking out some breeders in my state, talked to a few, got some tips and leads and such, ended up finding a breeder an hour away with some pups that were a few months old, including a boy black & tan smooth. We had planned to go this past saturday, but the breeder had a pregnant dog with a c-section scheduled for sunday that ended up in early labor friday night, so they had an emergency c-section a day early. It did not go well, so we didn't come by. Breeder said wednesday would be ok, I took a half day from work today and we headed over there this afternoon. He's adorable. He's very polite and friendly, he paid a lot of attention to my wife at first but eventually he just cuddled up to me and stayed like that. He was really comfortable with me, let me hold him and just relaxed with me. He had 2 sisters with him and they just ignored me, haha. We're coming back in a few weeks to pay for him and get him.

Driving back from the park this afternoon, Pongo vomited bile all over me. Along with what I suspect caused it, some feces that he found earlier on the walk. I could tell he was about to puke but couldn’t pull over in time. Not a lot of room in an older Ranger but thankfully almost all of it landed on me or the seat cover. Poor guy was feeling incredibly awful after, all he wanted to do was snuggle all up on my lap while I drove home. Which is a problem for driving safely with a 90lb dog. He’s fine now and eaten two meals since, so thanks for that, buddy!

Campion is now about a year old, and the doctor tells me he's a bit overweight (hard to tell with all the floof), which may be why he puffs so much. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a call with some insight on what to feed him, which I'll appreciate because I've been feeding him 3 cups of Purina Complete Puppy Chow a day, and when I checked Purina's website, they think I should be feeding a year-old golden retriever 5 cups a day rather than reducing his intake.

the vet told me to feed my then 7 year old german shepherd/aussie kelpie cross a cup a day when i was told she was overweight. that was before her hips started to sour and she was a lot more active, but still not a 1 year old. i just got a cat and my 2 year old boxer/pitbull/rhodesian ridgeback mix is obsessed with him, but not in a dangerous way. he's calmed down a lot in the last 2 days, as he was so excited that he was vibrating and desperately whining. it has been sort of a good thing, because he was always just staring at the cat, trying to sniff him and the kitten is now very tolerant of him, but Frank still loves to chase after Gus when he gets the zoomies and Frank tries to play with him by pushing him with his nose and Gus doesnt really care for that. Gus will quickly smack him and hiss and Frank will back right off, and resume staring until he gets bored, which is usually pretty quickly. but i want to curb the chasing, but he's never been around cats and is just too excited to listen when i tell him to stop. normally Frank listens very well, but he's just too focused to listen when Gus is running.

Food recommendations on the bag are borderline meaningless. Feed the animal what gets them a stable weight. Generally the amount will decrease as they hit adulthood, since they're no longer growing, and somewhat less active.

Those food recommendations are apparently just made to guarantee no animal is underweight but nearly every animal will be overweight if it's followed

5 cups a day seems like a shitload of food. Pochi is only 20 pounds but she gets 1 cup every day.

At 1 year it seems to me it's time to go to adult food isn't it? Also consider getting away from Purina and pretty much any grocery store type food as they are mostly corn, look at something like Blue Buffalo or Taste of the Wild, the cost is higher but the dog will need to eat less of it per meal. Our first dog was pretty sedentary and we had to feed her way less than the recommended amount to keep her at a healthy weight. Our current dog is an enthusiastic walker and that's enough that we have to feed her a good bit more than the recommended amount to maintain a healthy weight. Newton is a little over 1.5 years and gets close to the bag recommendations. He gets walked about 4 miles per day with plenty of playtime in the back yard and the vet says his weight is perfect. He was staying with my parents for a few days and randomly decided to stop eating his kibble…still super into treats though. So he got switched from Carna4 which he had been on for a few bags back to Science Diet and he has been totally housing that. No idea why, just decided he was sick of it I guess.

Teddi gets 2/3rd a cup of food a day (plus whatever scraps I share with him) and he's still ~4 lbs overweight (~34 lbs total, not a very active corgi). Still paying off that weight debt after he got neutered. I didn't adjust his food intake until a vet visit revealed I was feeding him too much following the instructions on the bag. He ended up being 10 lbs overweight and we had to put him on a diet. MadFriarAvelyn fucked around with this message at 01:51 on May 2, 2024 |

I had the exact same issue and got poo poo on by some goon in the pet nutrition thread when I said I was following in the instructions and went there looking for some insight. I think it's stupid they put so much extra on the bad requirements..someone should sue them for their dog being overweight so they have to fix it. It makes it so hard to balance things out and keep your dogs health just right.
