I still cannot believe that anyone let that tape get out. Like most people probably assumed that was the case for most celebrities or rich folks, but it sounds so bad hearing it out loud.

I remember Carter saying the same poo poo on ESPN when he was part of Sunday Countdown and the MNF pregame, probably more than once.

It seems very likely that Ohtani wasn’t himself gambling. It also seems very likely that he paid off the bookie, because he told us he did, and because it’s a very plausible thing for him to have done for a friend. He later said that was a misunderstanding, almost certainly because someone told him privately that paying off the bookie also wasn’t allowed. Now, you can argue that him paying off the bookie was actually innocuous, because the reason it’s disallowed is so that you can’t just gamble at arm’s length through your friend, and you can’t have been doing that if you legitimately didn’t know about the bets. But it’s not unlikely that there will be evidence that he did pay off the bookies himself, because he apparently didn’t even realize it was something he needed to hide.

It’s national news, it’s specifically sports-gambling news that’ll probably inform policies going forward for a lot of other leagues, and we’re in the middle of the second-most appallingly boring part of the NFL offseason, surpassed only by the long months after we all getting tired of talking about what happened during the draft.

Ohtani is like if those rare college players who are great in both an offense and defense position, like WR/CB, ended up being great at doing so in the NFL.
