drat X-men 97' can deliver. All the episodes up until now have been solid, but this last episode definitely delivered on the potential for the show to really be something special. High stakes and crazy animation going on there. I expect Deadpool & Wolverine will supplant this, but right now it's by far the best animated or live action thing that's only possible because of Disney's acquisition of Fox. Granted there's basically no competition for that currently, but still. With how graphic, violent, and overall mature in theme both Marvel and DC have been willing to go in a lot of their comics from like the year 2,000 on, I'm increasingly starting to think that taking pretty much any major comic series and turning it into an animated series that's at a solid level of PG-13-ish or more and cribs a lot of its content from the storylines of the comic has a lot of potential. DC's been ahead of the curve on this by doing a lot of quality animated movies that were either heavily inspired by comics or direct adaptation of them, and I definitely picked up a general theme of "staying real close to the source comic = better movie" with those. There's definitely room for less intense animated shows too, like I've really enjoyed My Adventures With Superman recently and there's whole heaps of solid animated shows that were just "well here's a spider-man cartoon" or "here's your avengers cartoon" or "here's basically anything from the DCAU." I guess my big takeaway is that I want all the animated Marvel or DC stuff I can get since the batting average for delivering something really fun to watch on those has been way above what live action attempts at superheroes has been in my experience. Though like I brought up earlier, the right live action superhero content can definitely rock as well, it just seems to not be a sure thing. And to reference the MCU a bit, it seems pretty clear that Fantastic Four and an X-men movie are their last big chances to really wow people with how they handle comic book characters and catch some of that "Holy poo poo this Iron Man movie is actually good" feeling that kicked off the whole MCU. If I were in Feige's shoes I'd be throwing SO MANY resources at those two movies in particular to make sure they're just absolute bangers.

I've said it a lot in the Comic Book Animation thread but for all the love Nolan's Batman gets, I think the best Batman films will forever be Return of the Joker and Under the Red Hood. They're just superbly written, animated, and voice-acted. Plus I think I'm just a fan of "Batfamily" stories more than anything. Bruce with his kids and proteges are the best stories for me. I grew up with Batman Beyond and much, much later read The Dark Knight Returns. I liked the comic but I cannot help but wonder if BB was written as a more hopeful rejoinder to it. DKR Batman is a broken, drunken mess who can never escape "the life." In BB, he very much starts the same as in the comic, but Terry helps him find hope, and then also helps him fix his relationship with Barbaara and Tim in Return of the Joker. It's certainly a more beautiful ending than DKR. Anyway, I want so badly for X-Men Evolution to get the TV-14 treatment. Blood and death don't automatically equal mature, but the fact is that TAS and Evo both had to pull punches. (They can't even say Magneto had been through WW2, just "the war") I was thinking maybe they could do the Mutant Massacre of the Morlocks, a very, very famous storyline from the comics. Spyke in Evo is now part of the Morlocks so you could do an episode or two with them then the massacre happens. P.S. The Magneto stuff is laughably absurd when you think about it. Everyone watching TAS and Evo, even dumb little kids, know Magneto was in WW2 and a concentration camp. But the dialogue must not say what everyone knows out loud.

Yeah to me the dichotomy really stands out because I've seen so many absurdly gory and overtly sexual things depicted in all sorts of Marvel comics and in quite a few DC comics that I've read that are just fully mainstream series set in their main continuities. Stepping things up a bit towards not making things kid-friendly makes particular sense in my mind to the X-men since I've read basically everything in the Krakoa arc that's just winding down in the comics now, and holy cow are those comics a splatterfest and sexfest compared to like, any classic spider-man comic or what have you. At this point I'm surprised comics haven't just thrown up their hands and said "screw it, we're writing in all the fucks and shits now instead of just writing #@%!" If I were able to wave a magic wand and get a re-do or expansion of an animated adaptation of a comic thing, I'd probably go with giving all the original Ultimate Marvel comics (and in particular the Ultimates) a solid 30-ish minute episodes and 4+ season run that stayed pretty faithful to the comics. Stretch out the few animated Ultimates movies they did and give them cooler more modern animation. They could also up that old Ultimate Spider-man show a bit, though that'd likely need the fewest changes to work. The X-men could also be adapted too with some interesting and different takes on the characters. And ideally it'd be treated as one connected universe so crossovers could happen. It'd be hard to not hit all my nostalgia centers if I got hit with 100+ hours of "DCAU but with the OG Ultimate Universe" animated content. Now that they're bringing the Ultimate Universe (in concept and name at least, though technically it's a whole new universe) back in the comics and with X-men '97 being well received, I like to think there's a 1% chance someone will make a pitch for an animated series set in the Ultimate Universe. If nothing else putting Ultimate Comics Miles Morales into what's clearly that OG Ultimates universe in a series that basically follows his comic book origin and storlines up to the end of the OG Ultimate Universe seems like a winning formula.

I saw this thought posted somewhere else but the reason X-men 97 works against other marvel properties right now is that it's not some overly quippy, self-referential, MCU diaglouge. It's overwrought and earnest and that's what makes it stand out right now with superhero media.

The closest he gets to rebirth is via Cortez taking back all the boosters he gave Mags all at once and effectively killing him before putting him into the Earth's atmosphere. Mags returns "nourished" by the EM field around the planet. It's a very melodramatic moment (does he have any other kind lol) "The Earth's magnetic field has healed me as a mother nourishes her son. Now, I will have my vengeance!"
