If they have cracked the code on good automated filter coffee then I could see that thing being an attractive prospect. I'd never buy a gen one product from Fellow though, especially not one that complicated. Gen 2 will probably be the one to get.

Need a quick reality check.

I have a ROK coffee grinder. It's fast, I think the grind quality is fine. It's about 4 years old.

I shouldn't even consider buying another manual grinder right? Grinders don't really age, right? Buying a Kind M47 or similar high end manual will achieve nothing except letting me grind while watching TV, right?

Played around with one a little at the London coffee festival yesterday. Looked good from a far but was pretty plasticky when I got to touch it. Removable water tank was nice but the head didn't look very different to a cheap drip machine. That said I didn't get a chance to try and coffee from it and they might have done enough neat software stuff to make things better.

I impulse purchased some green coffee beans from an Ethiopian grocery a couple days ago.

I ran out of coffee today so I just toss-roasted some of the green beans over the stove and did a horrible job of it (I've since looked up some tips and I'll try again with better technique).

I brewed them up and it was drinkable but whatever. And then the last few sips in the cup had the most remarkable toffee flavour I've ever had from a cup of coffee.

Is this how addictions start?

My guess is you just didn’t let it cool enough to get those flavors.

I’ve found that especially with Ethiopian origin beans you don’t get much of the really nice, subtle stuff until you near around 100-115F

Me and a coworker both have our own hand grinders, beans, and Aeropresses at work. The only thing we have to share if we want coffee at the same time is the kettle. And the pourover if we want that.

So here's a question: If I have the money, and the desire for aesthetics and build quality, but not necessarily the ability to discern the level of quality between different types of grinders, is it still worth it to pick up a Niche Zero? I think a good part of my enjoyment of coffee comes from the ritualized behavior of it and not necessarily the actual flavor, but maybe getting a super high quality grinder will allow me to actually taste the difference. I got back into coffee lately since my kid got a little older and it became feasible to spend a little more time making it again (we were just using a Nespresso machine for the first year of his life because that's all we had time for), but quite frankly my palate isn't very developed after like 17 years of being a smoker earlier in life. For reference, I have a Baratza Encore currently.

I imagine the answer is "yes buy it, why the hell not", but maybe there's something else in that price range that's at the same level of quality I should be looking at. I have seen videos of the Niche and the difference in sound alone vs. my Encore is a pretty big motivator to pick it up as well.

There's almost certainly something much better than the Niche Zero that you can pick up. What sort of coffee do you plan to make with it? If it's filter, I'd instead have a look at the Fellow Ode. Cheaper than the Niche and with much better burrs. It just isn't suited for Espresso.

I've had my Niche Zero (paired with a PID Mod Gaggia) for about a year and a half now and really like it. You should probably at least consider a DF64 Gen2 since they can potentially be significantly cheaper depending on where you are in the world. It also uses flat burrs and has quite a few option to swap in. The Niche seems like it has better build quality to me and is quieter.

Flat vs conical burrs seems like mostly a preference thing. People with a more refined palate than I have will insist they can taste a difference, but I doubt I could. I am pretty happy with my combo.

Think it's safe to buy the Ode 2? I'm looking at that vs the one with the updated burrs.

Is there enough of a difference to justify the cost (stupid question...)

Let me rephrase, is it a noticeable difference?

Apparently the Ode 2 stock burrs are really close to how the SSP burrs taste. I wouldn't bother spending the extra.

Edit: For filter coffee, I don't think there's a better choice than the gen 2 Ode with stock burrs.

Probably! I had one back in like 2015 because it was cheaper than an electric burr grinder which I couldn’t afford at the time, but I remember it taking quite a long while to make enough for an Aeropress cup. What kind of features differentiate hand grinders from each other? What’s the general price range on them?

down here in Australia I picked up a 1zpresso X-Pro for 180AUD (~120USD) last year and I use it almost exclusively for espresso, with the occasional aeropress or french press with it. For me it's about under a minute to grind 16g of espresso

I've had a cheaper hand grinder before which was 'okay' but it gets annoying having to adjust the tiny knob on the bottom (same) to change the grind size on my old one. The newer one has a much easier grind size adjustment on the top. I think the length of the handle was shorter too which made grinding finer more difficult since you have less leverage

I have an electric grinder as well (Breville Dose Control Pro) but for espresso it doesn't have as fine a range of adjustment as the 1zpresso does, and the fine adjustment on the electric one involves removing the top burr from the hopper

I dunno much about the other brand hand grinders but the 1zpresso ones usually have different size burrs and different adjustment ranges per click (12.5 microns on the x-pro)

amenenema
Feb 10, 2003

Just a word of warning on hand grinders for espresso - I found it hard to get consistent shots on a JX-Pro and I'm pretty sure it was the variance in grinding speed. If I was really careful about that it was great, but something that had me chasing my tail until I figured it out.
