CodfishCartographer posted:I mean they are in theory coming out with a new album """"soon"""" - a handful of new songs have been played at shows within the last year or two. By kalnoky standards that means a new album is practically around the corner, but for the rest of us that means it might be a few more years before anything comes of it. For the rest of us that could mean anything between "this afternoon" and "never," inclusive.

Bird in a Blender posted:loving hell, Greg Lee from Hepcat died. Had a brain aneurysm and cardiac arrest on Sunday, he was only 53. The worst loving news. Yeah, I woke up to that news and it really sucks. I just have so many memories tied up with Hepcat. They were the first "real" show that I went to with my friends, at the Trocadero in Philly in 1998. When I got married, even knowing that she hates most of the music I listen to, my wife gave me free rein to pick any 3 songs for the playlist, and Dance Wid Me was one of them. The other time I got to see them was an odd experience - I used to travel a lot for work, and I sometimes managed to line trips up with concerts. So I ended up at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, WA to see Hepcat open for Flogging Molly, with a then-unknown Fitz and the Tantrums as the first band. In a very large crowd, I was one of maybe 8 people that cared about Hepcat in a tiny dance area near the stage and that was just a surreal feeling. Of course, I put Right On Time on in the car while driving my 7 year old to karate tonight, and he immediately jumped to "I don't like this song" when The Secret came on. Get some taste, kid - that's an amazing song. (I joke, because my poor children have absorbed some of my musical tastes - they constantly ask me to play the first three songs on the new Mustard Plug album) RIP Greg, thanks for all the music and memories.

I just got tickets to see Primus this summer, which is not remotely ska. However, Fishbone is opening for them! I've never had a chance to see Fishbone play live, but I've heard others say they're one of the best live bands ever, and they still play a lot of their early ska stuff on stage. Super excited to see both bands.

Oh, I love Primus; they're just not as good a fit for this particular thread. I've never seen them live, though judging by the South Park concert they did on Paramount+ last year, it's gonna be great. I'll admit I'm not remotely up on modern ska. Most of the bands I was into in the 90's and early 2000's aren't around anymore. No Doubt played at Coachella last weekend (maybe this coming weekend too?). I figured they'd lean hard into their pop/rock radio singles, and they kinda did, but they did a ton of their ska songs too. They sounded absolutely amazing, which was a huge disconnect from my expectations before tuning in.

I'd seen them before and I've seen them since and they've been good, but I've always held a grudge against the album for that dumb reason. But Permanent Revolution is good! They got added to this bill at the last minute because the Bar Stool Preachers dropped off. I was looking forward to seeing them, but Catch 22 is a fine replacement.

Looking forward to watching their set on Saturday if Coachella streams it on YT again. Probably going to go all in on the SoCal ska-adjacent bands and watch the sets by Sublime and The Aquabats as well if they're made available. Yeah, I've thought about that a lot, but I'll definitely cut SHJ some slack on that since, you know, two of the original members are dead. RBF was just Aaron by the end, but the trumpet player had been around since Cheer Up! Or with Less Than Jake, JR isn't an original member, but he's been in the band so long, is there a difference? Especially with the size of most ska bands, it's a very Ship of Theseus question.

Wikipedia article update: quote:On April 25th, 2024, Fishbone put out a vague posting on Facebook, indicating a major lineup change for their upcoming live dates. After the magazine "Q" reached out to their management, it was revealed by founding member Christopher Dowd, that founding members Norwood Fisher and "Dirty" Walt Kibby had left the band. Dowd and Angelo Moore would continue to perform, with new musicians to be announced, as Fishbone.

As usual, ignore all of this unless or until you have a new record in your hands, but Tomas posted this indicating new Streetlight album late this year:quote:1. The album is 85% finished being recorded and should be at around 90-95% finished within a month or so. I say this with an estimated 82-96% degree of accuracy. Based on previous experiences and evidence, the accuracy of my personal concept of accuracy usually hovers right around 78%. It’s almost done is what I’m saying here. Much more detail in the post.

We're certainly only hearing one side of the story, but yeah, it makes me wonder if there was not just a struggle for control but even some financial shenanigans going on behind the scenes. Interestingly, they didn't really get into any of the details about why Kibby left; hopefully if there were financial misdeeds he wasn't also involved. I have never done a ton of listening to Fishbone; I remember Party At Ground Zero and not a lot else, and when I have tried randomly sampling their discography, I haven't always been into what I heard. It's possible I just don't like their sound, but I'm interested in giving them a real shot; are there particular standout albums or tracks I should listen to?

Fishbone's style shifted a lot through the decades. A lot of their songs are Ska-inspired, but I feel their best album is The Reality of My Surroundings, which is straight early-90's alt-rock.

Thought I read about this here, but it looks like Joe Gittleman (ex-Bosstones bassist) is putting out his own solo album on Bad Time: https://badtimerecords.bandcamp.com/album/hold-up Single out now, album out June 21. I like the single. Also featured on the record are personnel from Big D, Pietasters and Bad Operation. There's a full list of personnel on the album page. Bad Time are really killing it. Most of the noteworthy ska releases of the past couple years have been under their imprint, I think? I never thought I would regularly check a record label's page, but I check theirs.

Ugh yea that sounds like a real poo poo situation. As far as Fishbone albums to listen to, I’d start with Truth and Soul and Reality of My Surroundings. I like Truth and Soul better if the two though. They’ve always bounced between genres, the 80s were way more ska and funk, while I thought the 90s they got more rock, grunge and metal. Maybe the best thing to listen to is Fishbone 101, which was a best-of comp in the mid 90s. It covers pretty much every song they would play at shows.
