The ESPN article posted upthread claims he told the Falcons that.

But the article also made it sound like everyone was worried Bill would end up de facto running everything anyway if they hired him, so

Right. The read I got from the article was that after talking with the Krafts (plus all the media stories that came out before and during the Patriots' breakup with Belichick), basically everyone was convinced that Belichick would inevitably come to control the team; if he didn't directly execute a putsch by shanking people and installing his own loyalists, he'd just Wormtongue his way into it.

That honestly doesn't seem to be an unfair read.

I agree but I think Kraft is upset about how siding with Belichick hurt his personal relationship with Brady.

I mentioned this previously but is a coach in his 70s really going to be apart of your long term plans? Like 5 years?

Because probably not, which means you need a succession plan.

Billy has shown time and time again he's married to the guys he trusts, and also shown non of those guys go on to be successful head coaches.

So unless you've got a win now roster, with plans to overhaul the entire org in 2 to 3 years, its a tough sell.

Dude could still be a banger coach but the long term upside just isn't there.

Oh man, Welch spawned so many evil rear end management policies. He's the one who came up with that bullshit where you should always be pitting people against each other and then cutting the lowest performers every year.

Oh that's another fun issue, Billy B only trusts his guys but now a lot of them are on Mayo's staff. Genuinely how many people does Billy even have that aren't HCs, retired, or already staffed that he could pull from for a potential staff?

Bill Belichik: definitely the first person I think of when I hear the word 'proletariat'

Such a snakebit player. I was so excited to see him coming out, liked him better than any other RB that year by far and then he proceeds to be injured essentially 100% of the time.

e: 234 carries in 3 years. More than I thought, to be honest.

Also I did not know his actual first name is J'Kaylin. Please someone adapt that white person baby name meme and put that in there

I still think Belichick would be a great DC for someone. I wanted him for the Packers but obviously not happening anymore and I think LaFleur would've had his authority threatened by having Belichick on staff for the reasons you line out. You'd have to put him with an offensive-minded coach who's very established in the franchise and who is happy to leave defensive autonomy to Belichick.

He would be one of the very best DCs in the league. He also doesn’t want to be just a DC so it doesn’t matter.

Wedge Regret

The blue and white ones look great, clearly inspired by their uniforms from like pre-2003 before Matt Millen came along and started messing with stuff.

Except the black alternate. It’s not awful, just a color swap, but I don’t like the whole “black alternate for the sake of having a black jersey” laziness and that could have been left in the Millen era. Not sure what helmet they’ll pair it with, but hopefully that’ll only get worn like once a season.
