I've been doing some After the End campaigns and invariably defaulting to Architect and Scholar for every character because they're just that all-around useful.

Also, like, where is this pope analogue located compared to you? The mercenary pools are region-based IIRC, their region may simply have access to more (I don't think it's ever been explained how that is calculated but I assume it's dynamic somehow just from observed behavior).

scaterry posted:How could you mention the Scholar tree without mentioning the best perk in it, Apostate? It ( with one other faith conversion discount) allows you to be any faith on the map, any time. You can opportunistically convert for decisions, useful tenets, divorces, or even just to change your realm priest. It's better than true ruler since faith tends to be a hard vassalization blocker, too. Open-minded is also rather strong since most people will be a different culture, it's like +15 general opinion. Thanks for the call out! Am aware of religion swapping, but have not explored as much as you as personally, to me, it feels horribly gamey (esp. pause, convert, do things you want, convert back, unpause). But you’re right, it is very powerful as you have access to pretty much every tenet for 500 piety. For game balance, I feel like there should be a cooldown on voluntary religious changes, but here we are. It is also mildly annoying if you’re swapping from polygamy to non-polygamy (all the base aniconism faiths are monogamous, for example). The ideal power game is make your own variant religions with all the traits you want access to and then convert among them as needed. Which decisions do you find it valuable to convert to religiously? And I assume you can’t convert, start a holy war, and then convert back instantly, right? (I haven’t tried it). What’s the Defender of Faith tyranny trick? And yeah, Befriend is great — usually my first pick in diplomacy, and since there’s a grand wedding event that gives you a full diplo perk, usually get it pretty early. I rarely ever set a diplo focus until I run out of everything else — will usually end up with 6-7 perks in diplo just from weddings / travel. alcaras fucked around with this message at 15:59 on Apr 21, 2024 |

There is something I just don't understand. My top liege Aquitaine is fighting the ducal rebels of Barcelona and Gascony with his ally France. I attack the Duke of Toulouse as my character has a claim on it while this is happening (my liege is the Duke of Aquitaine). My war target calls in his allies the Duke of Gascony and Barcelona. Remember both of those are already in a war with our top liege and his ally France. What doesn't make sense to me is why the King of Aquitaine and France is suddenly hostile to me as we share enemies and our wars are not related? Common enemies means that people are always hostile to each other because you can theoretically siege the same land?

Yeah, mutual hostility is kind of a failsafe to allow you to occupy territory that has already been occupied by someone else in a different war against the same war target. Without this, situations can arise where wars just get stuck because occupation of the war target is split between two separate wars, which means neither of them get ticking warscore because they don't have full occupation. The way the AI seems to treat this mutual hostility is a "stay out of my way and I'll stay out of yours" approach, where they will siege territory you've already occupied if it's part of their wargoal, but they won't go out of their way to attack your troops.

All right. They followed the duke of Gascony into a fight with me and supported him in that fight even though they are at war with each other. Slightly weird I would say but I can understand why it is organized like this to prevent endless wars.

Yeah I'm not really sure how it decides who is on what side when it comes to those "three-way" battles, the game isn't really set up well for it. I tend to just avoid areas with hostile armies wandering around since bumping into them by accident still makes a fight happen and you just end up losing troops for no benefit.
|
# ? Apr 22, 2024 17:13 |

Not 'no reason'! Fighting hostile armies which aren't actual enemies results in prestige & faith instead of merely fame & devotion. Sometimes its worth jumping on a totally unrelated army just for the loot piñata. But yea 3rd party hostile armies will tend to give you space when waging war, it's no biggie.

You also don't get a truce cooldown with them in that situation, so if you're planning on fighting them next it's like a headstart.

you triage, and this creates a thick encrustation of basic stuff that wasn't there in the triage pile. after release the actually effective qa (the customers) start the deluge of bug reports and the encrustation gets covered in a pile of bugs, hardening all the while. the bug-squashers end up like doomguy on the cover of doom with the bugs for a coupla years and the encrustation becomes like a second family to the devs. "oh, #44215", they say. "what a nice little feature request". a grim day four years later when the pm demands it actually get done.

Not really, bug squashing and new features aren't necessarily the same person, and in either case paid DLC takes a priority over mending basic features which I think paying customers rightfully feel bitter about.

Particularly not their UI code, no. And yes, the people fixing or fleshing out old features are likely to be the ones tasked with adding new ones too, and CK3 had good bones (which is why I haven't touched the old game since) but needed a lot of both to fulfill its vision. We can and do disagree with how they prioritised needs and the order in which they implemented them without denying that they had to choose what to do first. That said I think message settings took so long because some designer took some convincing that no, actually, the new UI ISN'T streamlined enough that it doesn't need some messy forest of checkboxes to filter through all the information you can get. Isn't this the first of their games since, um,EU4 that added them back? edit: speaking of which, new DD just dropped. Where they're going on Legends and Plagues in a patch dropping next week (changelog is included), some discussion on design philosophy and communication, and some details of new features coming in Roads to Power and its free patch, including: -message settings -balance pass on cultural traditions -updating Royal Court events -AI Conquerors (suitable AI rulers can get a hyper aggressive/optimal personality and (optionally) a trait with bonuses to support in order to create midgame challenges, kind of like Anbennar Great Conquerors or EU lucky nations?) - an option to choose a different dynasty member to switch to on death (currently the game presents options for characters that look "interesting", which apparently includes landless ones from the screenshot?) -new start is 1178, which I don't think was confirmed before -a couple of paragraphs on how adventurers will work in RtP and screenshots from the new Family Estate for nobles in administrative governments like Byzantium (aside: I really hope the AI will be able to do "landless" gameplay at least in some similar ways to players, I really love the idea of at least SOME of the spares running off to make something of themselves in the world, Dallan Invictus fucked around with this message at 14:05 on Apr 30, 2024 |

I haven’t played this game in a while and just started again after all the updates. Legitimacy seems to be really annoying. I wish it gained over time like every other feature in the game. Why wouldn’t being king for 20 years not add to my legitimacy? Also seems very slow to add and really easy to lose it all, which is probably the point, but drat it sucks to deal with.

Legitimacy is kind of weird and I think the old activities could stand to give more. Funerals can give a ton if you are good at diplomacy. If you can start a legend do that. I think a legend at the final tier is worth like 1000 legitimacy total. I really like how they put the plagues on the map and think it works really well with the travel system. I find myself avoiding pilgrimages to areas where bad plagues are. Black death is brutal, just the whole game dying off. I almost avoided it because I went super heavy into plague resistance, but it got my counties eventually.

DD is saying a lot of the right things, I think this is the first mention ever of updating Royal Court events which is definitely one of those parts of the game you more play around than enjoy. Hopefully the actual implementation is good. Sounds like we won't have to be asking if there are no sick houses as much with the next update. Message settings will be terrific. Cautious optimism rising.
