I finally have one! Enjoyed Late Night with the Devil, looking to find more like it - TV broadcasts gone wrong and so on. I've got, so far, Ghostwatch, WNUF Halloween Special, but I'm looking for more of this type of thing. Late Night was great, minus the ending, which - in true found footage fashion - was a bit weak

There’s a sequel to WNUF called the “Out There Halloween Mega Tape” that’s decent. One Cut of the Dead might also fit the bill? We watched a movie pretty early on during lockdown called The Cleansing Hour (2019) that I remember being better than I expected, but I also barely remember it and can’t really vouch for it.

I would like to say that The Vast of Night also rips. Honestly I don’t have a good excuse for not listing it with Pontypool. The sub-genre of What If Radio, But Spooky? is absolutely stacked for some reason.

I’m not crazy about Beneath… but I know a lot of people enjoy it. It does have its moments with a cult that worships an unexploded ICBM. Escape… is probably my favorite of the original sequels. It starts as a pretty schlocky quasi-comedy before getting kinda bleak and tense towards the end. Conquest… continues the vibe of the end of Escape and has some fairly interesting 70s dystopian sci-fi vibes. I remember being mostly bored with Battle…, it really feels like they’d obviously run out of steam. I’d probably recommend Escape and Conquest for sure. The only thing you need to know going into Escape is that the future Earth from the original is destroyed in Beneath and the ape main characters escaped the explosion by going back in time. Yeah, they're all worth a shake if you don't mind the declining budgets. Even the live action and animated series try harder than you'd assume, though I wouldn't recommend them to the everyman.

I have watched all of the original Planet of the Apes sequels multiple times. I guess leading up to this moment. Beneath the Planet of the Apes is highly skippable. There’s a bunch of cave-ape shenanigans and then kerbloom the planet explodes. It’s not incompetent or anything, but it has no real juice and its only meaning is setting up the next movies. After that it goes back to being a mildly corny (to a modern eye) but very compelling series of pretty solid 70’s sci-fi films. Escape is two of the apes doing a reverse of the first movie and getting sent back to the 1970’s. It’s them getting experimented on by humans and is a legit solid scifi drama. If you like old Doctor Who, I think you’ll like this a lot. Conquest is the “far future” of 1983 where the world has descended into a bunch of fascist states reliant on ape-slave labor. (It makes more sense in context) Enter the time-traveling scientist-apes’ son who was raised in a circus after their death : Caesar. He leads an ape-slave uprising. Imagine Snowpiercer if everyone was wearing a gorilla costume. Do you wanna see an orangutan murder a cop with a meat cleaver? That happens like 50 loving times. Battle for the Planet of the Apes is about the post-apocalyptic power struggles between apes after the ensuing nuclear war from Conquest. It’s a pretty okay little proto-Mad Max. Lots of apes driving dune-buggies, mowing down humans with a light machine gun. I think they’re pretty good. Even Beneath is okay, just really light. If you like that period’s take on scifi as a lot of talking about morals with funny make-up rather than pulse-pounding action, I’d give it a pretty solid recommendation. It’s the kind of thing I generally wouldn’t tell people to watch, but just because it’s niche not because it’s bad.

man I disagree super heard, Beneath basically finishes the story of the first one. It builds on the themes very satisfactorily. The later ones are fine but they are mainly fun ape movies.

Conquest feels more apiece with the modern remakes, even has Caesar as a named ape character. It's also probably the most "fun" of the later Apes movies, probably my personal favorite

I got a fun one for you I've been addicted to 90's thrillers lately. The more outlandish the better! I find them to be pretty entertaining and unchallenging to watch. You usually get A+ acting mixed with highly improbably stories. One thing I do need to specify is I do need a disclaimer if the movie has scenes that show sexual violence. I watch most movies with my gf around and she doesn't like that stuff. You can recommend it but just give me a little warning. Goofy sex scenes and nudity are a-ok though! Here's what I've watched and liked Ricochet (1991) - i admit this movie is straight up the best movie ever. Jon Lithgow and Denzel are great and yes, the plot doesn't make much sense. Pacific Heights Reversal of Fortune Shattered Raising Cain I was thinking of checking out Presumed Innocent tonight.

Presumed Innocent has a stellar cast. Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger might be up your alley, as would In the Line of Fire. The Fugitive, obviously. Edit: Backdraft is goofy as gently caress.

Nick of Time is much better than its reputation. I remember watching Charles Dutton as the shoeshine guy, how he turned any conversation into a subtle "you should tip me a lot" pitch and thinking it was one of the most amazing bits of writing and acting I had ever seen.
