An old term for "ski jumper" in Finnish used to be "mäenlaskija", (a compound word made up from the possessive form of "mäki", hill and "laskija", in this case person who goes down something). This still doesn't explain why the ski jumper is counting ski jump hills, but what if I told you that "laskija" can ALSO mean "person who counts something"? The word "laskea" from which "laskija" (a person or thing that lasks) is very versatile! It can mean to calculate or to compute, to lower down, to let something out/go, to lay (as in to lay pipe), to run into (as in "the river runs into the lake") etc etc. BONUS FINGERPORI  Now this is completely untranslatable. In the original strip the team had found the tomb of the King of Savonia. People from Savonia have a reputation for being slow and laid back and talk in the folksiest of all Finnish dialects. In the original the king's powerful curse is just a very popular swear ("voi vittu", which is commonly translated as "gently caress you" but actually means "oh pussy") spelled in the Savonian style.
