Related to fighter pilot chat in the I/P thread, I don't know how to accept that Fetterman went to Harvard because I get the impression he's always been a loving moron, which chips away at the commanding intellectual heights of the ivies, and also it's clearly not working as a class signifier because he has none of the finishing school polish that's supposed to give the impression of intellectual prestige.

Look, that book is like 800 pages, and I got everything I needed from the front and back covers and the NYT review of it, okay?

It's there to sit on my coffee table for a while to impress my friends, and then it goes in the goodwill pile alongside all those books by Stephen Pinker and Ron Chernow

Between this and the TikTok ban I'm convinced that Democrats care more about arming and backing Israel than beating Trump.

Sure they'd rather have both (thus all the scolding to ignore the genocide and vote blue), but like if they somehow knew that the only way to win in November is to stop funding the slaughter they'd set their jaws and tell themselves it's a worthy sacrifice to make the hard decision to defend Western Civilization in the barbarous Middle East

I sincerely hope that once the genocide ends (preferably with Israel not existing and Palestinians retaking their land), there is a major reckoning for the conflation of "antisemitism" and pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel and the unquestioned support for an apartheid ethnostate. As cynical as I am, I think there might be, because calling the National Guard against 20 year old college students is a desperation move. If Israel has the upper hand in messaging, no one would dare speak out against their bloody massacres of Palestinians.

"Never again" means never again - for anyone, anywhere.

It does seem like shot nerves, because the response to the violent crackdown in Israel hurting Israel's image at home logically shouldn't be a violent crackdown at home in defence of Israel's image. There's no part that makes sense.

Fascists maintain control through fear. Once people begin to realize that they don't have to live in fear, fascism loses. The fear of being labeled an "antisemite" or the 'mighty' IDF wiping the floor with you for opposing them is fading, and Israel/its supporters are on their back feet desperately trying to claw back control. It won't work because - imo - the cat's out of the bag.

It scares me because I remember back in the Obama years, lots of my friends saying "Fine, if that's what a socialist is, then I guess I'm a socialist" and the label losing most of its power. It's practically a joke if you're not a member of a particular cohort, and it led to some people actually engaging with Marx and other thinkers.

But I see "Well fine, I guess I'm an antisemite" and the conflation of "Zionism" with "Judaism" leading down a much darker path once the fear of the label is gone...

I, of course, have no practical answer as to how to fix this beyond wiping Israel and their cronies off the map and trying the war criminals for genocide, so that normal Jews can just live their lives without being associated with racial supremacists

It's a huge problem. Zionists have cried wolf once too many times and now people are less receptive to the accusation of antisemitism - even when it might be actual Jew hatred and not "college students saying 'from the river to the sea'. I am not Jewish so I wonder what sort of reckoning is already happening in the Jewish community over the conflation of Judaism and Zionism.

If Biden wins liberals will take it as an endorsement for supporting Israel

If Biden loses they will blame it on "pro-Hamas agitators" (aka anyone who opposes genocide, so most of the country) and double down on supporting Israel

I don't think the Hastert rule was even a formal rule (and even the formal rules are meaningless anyway since they are decided by majority vote therefore they can be ignored by majority vote), it was more like a suggestion and speakers ignored it all the time.

If the speaker opposed something that would pass with the minority party's help it was an excuse to kill it without a vote, but if the speaker supported the bill the rule didn't stop them from bringing it up if they wanted to.

Someone found some great media that shows the degree to which Israelis despise the diaspora. Apparently even Reform Judaism, which is found in the diaspora, makes them so angry there's a minor single-issue political party that is based around that?

In this case it's because it was never a congressional rule so congress shouldn't be expected to care about it.

I think it's a political media problem. The "majority of the majority" thing is just something Hastert said occasionally that he believed a Speaker should do, and just in general, not every time, he ignored that philosophy plenty. Nobody ever wrote it in the rulebook. I think the media just started calling it The Hastert Rule and acted like it was some ancient and august tradition instead of just something a kiddy-diddler said he did sometimes.

Probably because breathless reporting that OMG CONGRESS BREAKS HASTERT RULE TO ADVANCE A BILL, IT'S GETTING SERIOUS YALL gets more clicks than "speaker schedules vote with bipartisan support"
