I remember reading a review of The Ladykillers where it said that this is the second Coen Brothers movie in a row where someone accidentally shoots themself in the head.

Ladykillers was fine, it was a weird slow burn and not up to usual Coen standards but it had a good vibe.

None of them are bad because they all contain some pretty rad scenes that make it worth sitting through the not good stuff. They are movies that are less than the sum of their parts (?)Tiggum posted:Probably saw them as children and never rewatched them as adults. You get the same thing with the Star Wars prequels. But as an adult I realize the prequels are really good (maybe not so much Episode 2)

I honestly liked Matrix 2 and 3 more as an adult. Still far from perfect, but I could appreciate the cool scenes more fully, and I now have more fun distractions during the bad parts than I did as a kid.sebmojo posted:I like the architects speech, it's great, also lowkey one of the best trolls of the early 21st century

The dubbed version of The First of the North Star that came out in the early '90's as japanimation started to take off is pretty terrible but I love the weird cadences of the English voice actors dealing with the unwieldy translations. Also, everyone explodes or gets sliced into pieces. That's pretty cool.

In it, you could kick bad guys, which would make them fly away, or you would punch them, which would make them explode. I never understood why punching makes them explode, but I'm glad to see it seems to come from the source material and wasn't just... weird NES weirdness!

Just finished 1990s The Rookie, which is probably someone’s favorite but absolutely not mine. First Eastwood movie and perhaps another three decades until I watch another one. Maybe I’ll watch the monkey ones, I don’t know. Are there a cornucopia of slurs in the monkey movies? Anyway I’m here to talk about Raúl Julia, who was the villain and finely dining on the scenery in parts. Christ what an actor, the versatility! I might check out Tequila Sunrise even though Mel Gibson. I love Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, wish he did more PBS sci-fi, also wish there was more PBS sci-fi, what a weird concept.

While the monkey movies are comedies, they are comedies from the 70s featuring Eastwood, so yeah, offensive language is almost guaranteed and also IIRC there are some rapey overtones. Maybe Cline Eastwood is not the star you want to follow. As for Julia, yeah he's something else. Isn't he playing a German in The Rookie?

High Plains Drifter blows way past overtones in the first 5 minutes to make sure you don't get confused and think Eastwood is playing a hero... Good enough movie otherwise but makes for an awkward start to movie night with mom & sister.

Thanks to the goons recommending Radioactive Dreams! I watched it, and it really is the perfect "bad" film. The story is insane, the tone is all over the place, the music is ridiculous. But it does that thing that only really good Bad Films do: it never bored me and never stopped surprising me with some new madness. Would recommend, would rewatch.

A Worrying Warlock posted:Thanks to the goons recommending Radioactive Dreams! I watched it, and it really is the perfect "bad" film. It's true that there are a lot of "Bad Films" that are just bad. I'd say that most of the classic bad films - Ed Wood's output, for example - are just boring and tedious. I think it was Nathan Rabin who used to talk about "failures" and "fiascos" where the latter had a massive disconnect between ambition and skill, making for a truly Bad Film.

I rewatched They Live on Saturday and rereading the initial reviews from its release are baffling. Like you’d be insane in 2024 to call it a bad film but 1988 seemed really hellbent on doing so? Or at least minimizing it to beefcake brawls and 50s-esque aliens? Makes me wonder what is out now that’ll be seen as so ahead of its time in 30+ years. Maybe not Morbius.
