They just flare really hard and late, then land on a skateboard to roll out the forward velocity.

The guy that went over died when he hit one or more of the cables. He pretty much turned to mist. It's so, so stupid. And there's an entire industry sprung up to service these people. [Tell me if this is offtopic] I really feel that we need to NOT hide all the videos of people dying, like when they fall off buildings doing ticktock trends and the like. All we have is this stream of reinforcement and people doing absurdly dangerous stuff and looking cool doing it, without the accompaniment of why our instincts are justified in recoiling from it. Everybody knows that skateboarders take tumbles as part of their practice, it's been on tv for our entire lives. But every time a skydiver goes splat or a bungee cord snaps it was an absolute tragedy, a total act of providence, and the obligatory recording the victim was making will never be released as that would be crass, of course. As a contrast, Health & Safety videos have no reservations of telling you about how the auger thirsts for flesh, and here have a look at this xray of a guy who's leg got eaten by a belt.

OPs point seems to be if people looking up videos of an activity see half of everyone dying then maybe they'll be more careful.

Serephina posted:[Tell me if this is offtopic] I wonder if it would do any good. I think there will always be an element of the population that will do handstands on the edge of a cliff, whether they have seen people die doing the same thing or not. It's like overly punitive punishments for breaking crimes are supposed to "deter" people from committing them, but it never seems to work out that way. There is also a key difference between a tik toker and an osha video. The former tend to put themselves in obviously dangerous ludicrous situations. The latter tends to be more day-to-day people put into situations because of work. The former I learn nothing, the latter I learn angle grinders are a bad idea.

Yeah I also work with a former wing suit and BASE jumping guy (last I heard he quit anything other than regular skydiving at his wife's insistence, broken legs were involved). Regular engineering salary at a non-FAANG (also ), and also with a couple kids so not all disposable income either.

If you are willing to climb yourself base jumping has very little overheads after the initial expenditure. Skydiving you need to pay to get your dumb rear end hauled into the sky so they can yeet you out again.

I tend to enjoy being able to clutch my pearls and say "oh my" as a guy slides underneath a giant truck, comfortable in the knowledge that somehow against all odds, he ultimately will crawl out, brush the dust off and walk away.

I'm guessing if you suddenly curl up in the fetal position, you will fall. And that's why I will never go base jumping.
