Seeing the documentary about the JWSTS at Udvar-Hazy left me with such a sense of childlike wonder and fascination. All of my interactions with people involved in space- ranging from the professors who taught the entry level astronomy and astrophysics courses I took as electives in undergrad to the professor I met last month who talked my friends’ ears off about how cool eclipses are- have been super positive and left me convinced that they have the highest degree of personal and professional satisfaction with their work. More funding for NASA plz, preferably all of it

fun detail about voyager, the program code only exists in always-powered static RAM like all your SNES cartridge saves. The designers figured if the radiothermal generator output dropped below that threshold everything was hosed anyway and they probably hit a rock.

Fully fund NASA and the IRS and we'd be 300 years further down the road as a society practically in the blink of an eye.

The state is only asking for $1k per instance of violation (that's apparently the maximum allowed by law here), but they also said they're not seeking incarceration, but the defendant seems hell-bent on it. At a minimum, the judge probably won't be granting any 50/50 calls to Donnie btw happy bleachiversary https://twitter.com/BidenHQ/status/1782780187047788773?t=EKshH57gVY-Id2ZDCrPBFA&s=19

It's always wild how Donnie is such an idiot that he basically hands prosecutors a pogo stick to clear intent requirements https://twitter.com/AaronBlake/status/1782822627565789460?t=6A0j7y4_Pd9_epoO329ijg&s=19 The law: ok this is all probably legal if your intent was anything else but to influence the election. Hiding it from Melania is cool. Simple reputation PR management about loving a porn star is fine. Or spiking it because you're embarrassed is legal. It just can't be to deliberately bury a story so it can't influence the election. That's the one thing that's not legal, ok? Donnie: HEY PECKERHEAD, BURY THE STORY SO IT CAN'T INFLUENCE THE ELECTION

Does this actually happen? I've signed employment agreements that include non-competes for practically every job including some in seriously anti-labor states, and it has never been a factor with changing jobs. It seems like a good policy change on paper, but is it like the federal marijuana possession clemency where it helped like 11 people in practice? If it's just a press release while a meaningful rule change is passed off to someone else for years (like actual marijuana rescheduling) that's less impressive. Its basically something companies slip in as a thread. A lot like NDA for illegal things - technically enforceable through threat, but easily laughed off in court. Its something to hang over your head if they need it.

There are plenty of employees who don't really know any better, too. They agreed to a non-compete and will honor it (or figure they just have to) without knowing it's mostly BS. In addition, it's just a thing that has a chilling effect on, well, everything except the boss's sense of security I guess.

I know people who have turned down offers of employment over fear of violating a non-compete. It has the effect of deterring people from moving companies, which translates to suppressed wages as well as limiting the spread and cross-pollination of ideas throughout an industry

Epic Systems (of 'gently caress you we can require employees to agree to arbitration re employment dispute' SCOTUS fame) notoriously would blackball any employees who left to go work for (much better paying) 3rd-party Epic consultancies before their 1y noncompete was up

non-competes are a big issue for physicians. it's common that if they take a job with a health system they'll have a non-compete for practicing within a 30 mile radius or whatever, and since new physicians tend to have lots of debt they're signing contracts very one sided for the employer and very difficult to get out of. anything that helps not gently caress providers at the altar of shareholder value so they can do their jobs better is a good thing
