It turns out that, in a lot of 4H type competitions, you have to maintain some form of eye contact with the judges (because you're part of the livestock presentation). The previous year of this competition, one kid was docked points for not maintaining enough eye contact. Everybody thought the call was bullshit. So this year, in a form of malicious compliance, they decided to stare directly into the judges souls. "malicious compliance" makes a good username
