I really feel that we need to NOT hide all the videos of people dying, like when they fall off buildings doing ticktock trends and the like. All we have is this stream of reinforcement and people doing absurdly dangerous stuff and looking cool doing it, without the accompaniment of why our instincts are justified in recoiling from it. Everybody knows that skateboarders take tumbles as part of their practice, it's been on tv for our entire lives. But every time a skydiver goes splat or a bungee cord snaps it was an absolute tragedy, a total act of providence, and the obligatory recording the victim was making will never be released as that would be crass, of course.

As a contrast, Health & Safety videos have no reservations of telling you about how the auger thirsts for flesh, and here have a look at this xray of a guy who's leg got eaten by a belt.

Personally I'd rather just see the close calls and near misses in this thread than the actual brutality that spinning machinery is fully capable of.

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

The stairs are probably not screwed down, if you lean against the wall the steps will ricochet out sideways into the void and you will fall. A bit like a ladder sliding out.

Those are the stair rails and mounting plates, they are one piece, bolted into the wall, awaiting actual stair steps (and railing)

Some people really are incapable of handling trams, I used to work as a tram conductor, which also involved occasionally standing at the platform screaming at people to watch ou, as they just stepped out in front of the tram. The first day, I did it to save people's lives, but after that, it was to save the psychological health of the drivers.

What if we paint over the windows so the drivers don't have to know about it?

Trams were there before cars and trucks. But the first cars/trucks used to require a man with a red flag walking in front of the car, in certain countries - i think it was the UK.

The big difference is that a tram has 2 to 3x the brake distance a bus has. Rubber on asphalt VS steel on steel makes a huge difference, even with magnetic rail brakes. So while neither a bus driver nor a tram driver can avoid a collision when someone steps right in front of a vehicle - the typical light weight (less than 15.000kg) city bus can stop in less than 20 meters, while a 50 ton tram needs 50 meter or so. Don't pin me down on the numbers, i don't feel like getting the exact numbers right now since i'm at work.

I'm a big proponent of both rail and road-based public transport, but imho rail's place is in areas where you can make reasonably sure that people will not have to cross the tracks. Trolleybuses are the way to go in places where brake distance saves lives. Trolley-battery hybrid if people start moaning about the overhead cables. Less batteries is better for the environment and if you can charge them while under the trolley lines, you also don't have the issues of the massive charging infra needed at depots.

Amsterdam has a lot of tram-related deaths too. Rail vehicles just are a big risk in cities. I know that they're a good way to improve capacity,, and the vehicles and infra last for decades, but i'd rather have 2 buses or a double articulated bendy bus on what would otherwise be a dedicated tram track in a city, than an actual tram.

It's something about often being at ground level that gets me. If between the tracks is grass or the crossings are well marked it's fine, but places like manchester just feel unsafe to me

I actually did have this issue at Manchester when I went cos I've not been anywhere with trams before and the idea of dedicated tramways at ground level just didn't occur to me.

Like oh, there's no road here I can just walk, oh I'm actually wandering across a tramway without realising it.

It's a weird system, like a rail station except you're expected to just dodge the trains?

Flamethrowers tend more toward zambonis and compact snow to ice or resurface ice to fantastically slippery unless you are able to get the base surface boiling hot. Ex. Train flamethrower doable cause the rail doesn't mind being 212F and can get there quickly. Concrete, asphalt, or dirt, gonna tend toward skating rink as the ground resists heat and tends to refreeze any water
