It might also buffer X seconds, so if it cuts out for a second, you won’t notice the skips.

It’s today’s version of the anti-skip on Discmans!

So in the USA, the only way I can get an Apple Watch that measures SpO2 at this point is if I buy a used model that was purchased before the early 2024 cutoff (which can be verified by certain characters in the model number)? Change of ownership on an old model doesn't affect this?

Correct. E: also the ones that are being sold now still have the blood oxygen hardware, it’s a software disable, so it’ll likely be reenabled in the future after Apple either wins their appeals or reaches a deal.

Additionally, if you need to have it warrantied for any reason, you'll likely lose SpO2, since Apple Watch warranties are all hardware swaps.

Apple’s permitted to bring in functional SpO2 watches for service/repair and for warranty replacement. (This doesn’t 100% mean you won’t lose SpO2, since what they’re permitted to do is distinct from what they’ll actually do, but the actual judgment provided them with this ability.)

everything that I've seen is that warranty swaps end up as SpO2-disabled ones

How do I turn on SpO2, or did one of the WatchOS updates disable it?

If you've had it since launch, no, it will have it (in the US, anyway, idk about other countries). Open the Blood Oxygen app.

Entirely possible! I’m familiar with the lawsuit and its outcomes, not with the Apple warranty process.

Oh, wow, look at that :eyepop:

Yeah, I bought it on launch day, US model and apparently it's been tracking it ever since the day I bought it in the Health App, I just never thought to look for it. I picked my "Favorites" or whatever for the Health app dashboard, and I guess I glanced right over that. Thank you, added  :h:

(I hope an average of 98% is good over the years I've had it, seems like 100% would be best :ohdear: )

This is why I thought that one of the trillion WatchOS updates might have disabled it, but clearly that's not true.

Anything over 95% is normal. Below 92% is where you should be concerned, but only if it's staying there since it's not going to have perfect measurements all the time.

Nope. Apple won in district court, but lost in the ITC - but the ITC doesn’t have jurisdiction once product is in-country, only when it’s crossing the border and for a limited time thereafter (basically while still in Apple’s possession). They can’t order Apple to disable the feature for customers who already have a watch.

My Ultra 1 is already down to 88% battery health. I did a 30-minute run today and am ending the night at 10% battery, where it used to be 60. If I hit the gym on a day where I have a late hockey game, I have to charge for a bit in the afternoon.

After years of lovely watch battery life, I’m starting to think that a nuke and start over might be best. I’ve been rolling on the same backup since like iOS 3, including many betas. That’s gonna suck so much and take forever. :sigh:

My S8 is at 86% health and I’m usually down to 20-30% by 6pm with one morning run in the books. Did a hard reset but still kind of iffy. It doesn’t really bother me too much when I’m working from home, but when I have an out and about day I’m mildly annoyed that I get the battery warning before I get home.

I wish it would just drop below 80 before my applecare expires in September :|

Also Weather complication is just randomly but consistently flasing “Loading weather…” again. Seems to update when my iPhone disconnects from WiFi so I’m wondering if it’s something with my network at home. Can’t figure this poo poo out to save my life.

I mean… there are known ways to degrade a LiON battery… like drain it to zero repeatedly

I know it's bullshit to shut off core functionality of an expensive gadget you paid for, and if you're mad about it you probably should be, but one bit of advice I got is that turning off AOD does have a huge impact on battery. My series 8 is still at 95% health and with no workouts it loses about 40% of its charge a day. Logging a five hour hike is about 30-40% of its charge.

I just kind of went through and disabled all the active stuff I never use.. Siri, raise to wake, umm.. a few other things..

I do use raise to wake every now and then but I'm actually ok trading that for a few more hours and just tapping my watch if I need it. I actually found raise to wake kind of hit or miss where if it works it's great, and if it doesn't work then I have to dramatically overexaggerate raising my arm to get it to comply which never fails to get a laugh out of whoever I'm around.

I could force kill my battery but honestly it's not something I want to put much concerted effort into. Knowing me I'd start and then forget about it, and end up with like 80% on the dot the day my AC+ expires and get the best of both worlds

So my Ultra 2 has started to charge only to 75%. Evidently, this is normal battery management behavior. Incidentally, I haven't been exercising for the past 3 days. Related?

Yes, if you have optimized charging on or whatever. It realizes when you’re a lazy loaf and says “this person definitely doesn’t need a full charge.”

On the advice of the thread I disabled raise-to-wake, and I think a bunch of other stuff, as well as clearing out my "running" apps, and I'm at like 50% by the time I'd normally take my watch off anyway. True to form I didn't do it scientifically in a way I can measure the impact of individual items so I can tell which might be Ok to flip back on, but I'll take the win I think.

Looking to upgrade to an Ultra whenever new watches drop anyway, so as long as I can keep battery life pleasant until then I'll be Ok tapping my watch to wake it.

Following on from this, what are some actual reputable/good sellers of bands (apart from Apple, that is)? I'm in Australia, so I'd love to hear any recommendations that ship here.

I'll be very honest and say that I'm rocking cheap, generic drop-ship bands from Amazon and outside of replacing them when they get really gross or faded every year or two I haven't really even thought about buying a band anywhere else.

But I guess just saying that, there's good knockoff bands and just really awful lowest-effort-possible knockoff bands on Amazon, so I suppose you have to be prepared to just take a $10 hit if you choose wrong. Can't fault anyone for wanting to avoid all that.

My Nike Sport knockoff is holding up incredibly well, is about as secure on my wrist as anything can be. I switch between that and a few milano loop copies in various colours, all of which I'd say are doing the job just fine. The real problem with Amazon is that I can't really point to any specific brand because they're all come and go random-word nonsense brands that may or may not exist on the Australian site. They all seems to sell the same small subset of goods, but gun to my head I probably couldn't tell you which specific item I'd recommend.

I forgot to update about my wife’s series 9. It seems like it’s her phone that is causing the issue, I swapped her 9 with my 7 and I was getting normal battery life out of it and my 7 was doing the same for her. I even went so far as to reset her phone as a new one and still the same. It’s a mystery. I’ve since returned the second series 9 and she is just using the Fitbit inspire 2 that my insurance company randomly sent me for free. I still have her series 3 and will probably take it to replace the battery if we ever figure out what her phone is doing that drains watch batteries.

This is all just brainstorming stuff, but a few things to check:

Is wifi and BT enabled on both devices? They should be for the best experience. It could be an app. Might need to uninstall any 3rd party apps from the watch and see how that works. If it's working correctly, then you start enabling apps one by one to hopefully find the culprit app. It could even be some sort of other service, like Messages causing an issue, where your phone is just hammering the watch with data.

iOS 17.5 and WatchOS 10.5 drop this coming week I think (they seeded RCs this week) so you may try installing those as well. It could magically fix the issue. At least you've ruled out hardware as the problem.

No, seriously... what kurds?!
On the Apple Watch Ultra, since the Workout app doesn't do anything special with the added screen estate, I wish it'd use the display border as a compass indicator, loosely like the Modular Ultra watch face. The marking points to north.
