This is another thing that has caused Trump Derangement Syndrome.

For years, historians have been arguing that Greek and Roman "Tyranny" was just a ruler appealing to the working class as his base of power and doing thing that upset the bourgeois that wrote history. Most of the offences of tyrants are against propriety, about half the time the "injustices" they are complaining about are the fair administration of justice, which ignored traditional aristocratic privileges. At first it seems counterintuitive, but it makes sense if you think about it for a second.

So "tyranny" as a concept was on pretty thin ice, people had started to make direct comparisons to how much the Confederates called Lincoln a Tyrant. The slave owning agrarian aristocratic society of the south flattered itself with comparisons to Greece and Rome but actually resembled them in a lot of ways, so seeing how Tyranny meant "encroaching on privilege to terrorize others" blew the doors off for a lot of people. To my memory, every Tyrant forgave debts and redistributed land. Even Plato admits the process where Tyranny follows what you might call "out of control class conflict" within a "democracy" (oligarchy). The Gracchi, I'm sure most people here have heard of by now.

But then, Trump got elected and "populism" was a bad thing agin, so there was a wave of books about the sacred norms and decorum of Athens and Rome, and how these mean bad tyrants listened to the howling mob and ended the golden ages of senators debating the finer points of viticulture while atop a mountain of human misery. There was a socialist historian, Jairus Banaji, I think who basically said: "listen, tyrants came in whenever the end of history became untenable", because of course that was the teleology of the Greek city states and SPQR as well, that politics was aristocratic privilege and tradition forever, and every disruption to the mode of production threw them into crisis that they could not respond to. It took someone outside the political system to deal with it.

All of that to say, the ACOUP guy does reflect the typical historian, in my experience, insofar as their understanding of current events can be tenuous at best, and when they project that backwards through time, it produces real dumb work.

Most likely the official policy of withdrawing funding was a temporary, time-based measure they were going to make permanent after Israel had put up their evidence. But since Israel just... didn't do that, the policy lapsed and nobody is going to renew it until Israel presents something tangible. Which they probably won't, not just because there's no real proof but because Israel thinks they don't have to actually motivate their cruelty anymore, they just have to whine loud enough and the rest of the world will fall in line.

No, I'm crushed. Very curious how support for genocide is going to fit into his upcoming work. I can't believe they're still writing poo poo like this as America denies Palestinian statehood and since it looks like Trump is going to win. The "both sides" stuff, I think, is already passé.

Freedom is the great American commitment, but as Snyder argues, we have lost sight of what it means—and this is leading us into crisis. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power: We think we’re free if we can do and say as we please, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible.

On Freedom takes us on a thrilling intellectual journey. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own experiences coming of age in a time of American exceptionalism, Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes—the habits of mind—that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. We come to appreciate the importance of traditions (championed by the right) but also the role of institutions (the purview of the left). Intimate yet ambitious, this book helps forge a new consensus rooted in a politics of abundance, generosity, and grace.

Preorder Now

When I see 2000lb bombs shuttled to Israel three times daily or whatever, and American students beaten up, I think "abundance, generosity, and grace." :911:

Keep in mind these are also protests against some of the core policies of imperial power at elite educational institutions of said power.

They're not protesting about some secondary trait of imperial policy. Protests against the Vietnam War tended to be against the draft specifically. Protests against the Iraq War focused on how it was unnecessary and ineffective. In both cases, it could be imagined that if those policies were reorganised, that outrage against them would cease.

These protestors (and the scores of likeminded millions) think of the Imperial core as directly, and explicitly evil. America is not a friend making a mistake. America and it's allies are the enemy. These are the people who should be the reserve manpower of imperial bureaucracy/intelligence systems/etc and they are starting to deeply despise the empire.

I think that's why so many people in the media/political elite are worried about these protests - they directly represent the fact that all they know and love is crumbling into ash.

So it's cool to come in this thread and be a doomer. Just remember that the coming doom is the doom of the great satan.

Perhaps in general but less so at universities and colleges, whose students after all were exempt from the draft.
The student strike of 1970 which Kent State was a part of and a major catalyst for was initially a protest against the expansion of the war into Cambodia but I understand wound up being antiwar in general. Over a million students took part (>10%) and it had moments atleast that were significantly more violent on the part of the protestors than anything we've seen here so far. 30 ROTC offices were burnt.

I have seen nothing to indicate these current protestors are ideologically opposed to liberalism. I think far more then than now, student protesters were opposed to America's ideology. They were the younger chunk of baby boomers and were largely effortlessly reintegrated into American society. Bill Clinton claimed to have organized such a protest at Oxford!

Faculty at the University of Texas Austin will go on strike tomorrow to protest today's deployment of state troops & police to crush protesters.

We fully support this strike action & call for its expansion to other universities & workplaces

-----------------------------

STATEMENT FROM CONCERNED UT AUSTIN FACULTY:
IN RESPONSE TO UT AUSTIN'S MILITARIZED RESPONSE TO STUDENT EVENT
We, faculty of UT Austin, condemn President Jay Hartzell and our administrative leaders' decision to invite city police as well as state troopers from across the state--on horses, motorcycles and bicycles, in riot gear and armed with batons, pepper spray, tear gas and guns to our campus today in response to a planned peaceful event by our students. The Palestine Solidarity Committee had planned a day-long "Public University for Gaza" educational event today on UT Austin's main lawn. The event was to have included teach-ins, study sessions, pizza, and an art workshop. There was no threat of violence, no plan to disrupt classes, no intimidation of the campus community.

Instead of allowing our students to go ahead with their peaceful planned action, our leaders turned our campus into a militarized zone. Police and state troopers with no clear plan of action initially blocked off, divided, cordoned and intimidated students to prevent them from gathering on the lawn. Eventually, police and troopers took over the Speedway. Students then occupied the empty lawn where police and troopers pushed the bulk of the crowd against the wall of UT Austin's hallowed fountain. At last count, several hours ago, fifteen students had been arrested. Arrests are ongoing. We are deeply concerned for our students' well-being and safety. We have witnessed police punching a female student, knocking over a legal observer, dragging a student over a chain link fence, and violently arresting students simply for standing at the front of the crowd. After 5pm the university police issued a mass evacuation order.

There can be no business as usual when our campus is occupied by city police and state troopers who are preventing our students from engaging in a peaceful demonstration of their first amendment rights. By bringing militarized and armed forces onto our campus, and refusing to call them off even with ample evidence of police abuse and endangerment of students, you have made our entire campus community unsafe. You have put our entire student body at risk.
No business as usual tomorrow. No classes. No grading. No work. No assignments. Gather at the main mall in front of UT Tower at 12:15pm as planned with TSEU.
This is #NotOurTexas.

Abby Martin wrote that Israelis consciously view things like bulldozing Palestinian homes in terms of the US removal of Native Americans, and part of the intensity of their negative reaction to criticism is the perceived unfairness of America "getting" to remove "their" Native Americans while Israel is not allowed to "complete" building their (ethno)state.

This overlaps with German sentiment vis a vis Lebensraum being inspired by US frontier policy, and similarly resenting the perceived hypocrisy of the United States' objection to German intentions to "clear" and "resettle" Poland and much of the Pale of Settlement as a frontier.

We both profess noble intent as we civilize human impediments. So if your hands are clean then noblesse oblige that you wipe that “who me?” look off of your face and concede our designs separated by nothing more than place and time. Don’t lecture me about plundered soil while you loaf upon your father’s spoils.
