I take umbrage at my posts being characterized as doomerism. I have specifically pointed to the utility of these protests in building a movement. However it is useful to examine past events to shape your current actions. It is also useful to recognize the limits that certain types of actions can achieve.

Perhaps you could expand on how these protests are anti-liberalism and anti-capitalism.

The only politics I can find in this is anarchist claptrap about not needing to organize.

The socialist revolution or the significant degradation of the ability of the American state to project power in the region are the only things that will end the genocide. It did not begin on October the 8th. What you are describing is slowing the genocide down, which is a worthwhile goal in itself, but still a genocide.

Apples and oranges. South Africa was not one of the fundamental underpinnings of America's energy policy. I fear this battle, divesting American universities & businesses from Israel, will be much harder.

======
Where I see these protests as being useful is in building solidarity between Americans and Palestinians. The fact there have been pro Hamas expressions is fantastic, rather than typical condemning both sides bullshit.

They are also useful for normalizing anti Israel sentiment within America. Particularly at the Ivy League schools, if these kids don't have their careers destroyed it potentially removes a major barrier to further opposition to zionism.

Lastly, and most importantly, is the potential for building a revolutionary movement. This is harder of course but probably necessary to end American support of Israel. It is hard to overstate the structural forces behind this support.

I think a good thought experiment is what sort of protests or mass movement would be required for America to stop giving Israel the bombs it is using in Gaza?

not a bad take but I think you could consider this more dialectically, connected to other phenomena. for instance, you have actual on the ground palestinian resistance orgs issuing statements of support. that’s genuine international solidarity of a type that hasn’t been seen in my lifetime. then there’s escalating logic of repression that lead to oct. 7th in the first place, has defined the response since, and is now sweeping through college campuses – some people in positions of authority might be savvy enough to understand the best approach is to wait this poo poo out, but those people are a distinct minority. the state of empire is absolutely leading to kent state 2.

branch out in one direction and there is a direct link between the palestinian genocide, the idf, us police, and cop city. repression and resistance are dialectically linked; atlanta is creating the conditions for a fusion of the palestinian and black liberation movements.

branch out in another direction and there are direct links between occupations and the labor movement. that’s the power of diverse tactics, they’re separate and pressure the system on all fronts until they’re not anymore.

branch out in a third direction and the spokespeople for these occupations are making direct links between palestine and indigenous struggles. yes it is couched in the language of academics but it is legible to anyone who has been through this cycle of spontaneous resistance before.

consider also the history of the 20th century: seattle, the iraq war protests, occupy, ferguson and BLM, the pipeline struggle, george floyd, gaza. parallel to that, the resurgence of the labor movement. these movements are growing more interconnected, more organized, more resistant to cooptation. will this be the one that finally breaks through? I doubt it but I see it as another beautiful, contradictory, necessary step forward. I see a new generation stepping forward onto the historical stage against an increasingly panicked ruling class that has neither the talent nor the vision to maintain their unrivaled control

Michael Powell was bitching in his article in The Atlantic that the camp had a spokesperson and the camp in general was obeying messaging discipline, something you know he’d never complain about talking to a spokesperson from a police department or college. so yeah; I suspect they have.

Someone I was talking to mentioned Oberlin being successfully sued by a bakery for 30 million dollars not too many years ago and in looking it up I read

"Some free speech advocates and lawyers have said the verdict of the case raises concerns about freedom of speech on college campuses.

Alison Schary, First Amendment lawyer at Davis Wright Tremaine, called the verdict "deeply troubling."

"Holding universities financially liable for student speech will inevitably lead them to police and censor that speech, creating a chilling effect that is antithetical to the First Amendment," Schary told Salon."

So I guess another reason for brutal crackdowns
