Did buses in post tram death in the USA run on their own lanes separate from traffic? I don't think so? Whenever i suggest a bus, i suggest trolley buses or battery + trolley buses (so no diesel fumes), and always on their own space separate from car traffic because putting buses along cars in traffic jams is just plain old stupid. But as far as i'm aware, putting the buses between the cars is exactly what happened in the USA and obviously doesn't work. But putting trams in traffic doesn't work either. It's even worse - there are a couple of streets where trams have to wait for a couple blocks to overtake cyclists, because even in Amsterdam not every street has a separated bike lane. You either cycle in the door zone between parked cars and the tram rail, or between the tram tracks, in neither of those cases the tram can overtake because there is too little space. Thinking about some streets around Hoofddorpplein.
Being Amsterdam they're usually working on solutions to install a separate cycle path, but that takes time.

But that's not what i'm calling for. I want buses with the capacity of trams (yes they exist, Utrecht had them) on bus lanes that look and act in every single way like tram lines, except for the fact that you can stop sooner and move over a meter or two if needed.
Neither do i want anything to be demolished, it's just that places where new lines are to be developed, that they either have to make sure there are no grade crossings with vulnerable traffic (trams rolling along slightly elevated tracks with pedestrian and cycle tunnels/underpasses underneath are awesome, see Cornelis Lelylaan) or that the vehicles used are intrinsically safer and still run on their own space without cars and stuff.

Yea replace trams lines with busses.
A bus never has a accident and all traffic magical goes away when a bus arrives.

Please show me on this doll where the big bad tram hurt you.
Take your time this is a safe space.

You pour water into it, the dryer vents to inside the house, and all the dust hits the water and sticks to the surface. I use it once a week and in the winter you're raising the temp and humidity in your apartment instead of blasting it straight out of the house, makes a lot more sense. It's a life saver if you can't punch a hole in your house or afford a ventless.

edit: As an OSHA bit, it says not to use them with Gas Dryers, but doesn't explain why. Apparently they all have that limitation.

I can’t imagine that water reservoir is particularly efficient at removing lint from the expelled air, since it’s just blasting air at the surface rather than using some kind of bong-like scrubber system.

Textiles are full of all kinds of horrible stuff and I know my asthmatic lungs really wouldn’t appreciate filling my home with it. Does it work ok?

I had one of those in my apartment and the answer for us was not really. Ours was much smaller, about the width of a pineapple.

The closet it was in ended up getting gross and covered in hosed up lint anyway. We never bothered to clean it because lol not my building not my problem.

https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2024/04/25/full-service-for-milwaukee-streetcar-disrupted/73462273007/

quote:

Full service of the M-Line for The Hop streetcar was disrupted Thursday because it is believed that a large vehicle hit and caused damage to the overhead wires, according to the Department of Public Works.

DPW spokesperson Tiffany Shepherd said the incident happened at about 3:40 p.m. at roughly the intersection of East Ogden Avenue and North Marshall Street.

The incident is still under investigation, but Shepherd said it is believed the large vehicle caused enough damage that when the streetcar came along the route it was unable to proceed.

and

https://www.jsonline.com/story/news...on/73441571007/

quote:

In less than 48 hours last week, two crashes with county buses resulted in two deaths and more than a dozen hospitalizations

...

Last Thursday, just before midnight, a driver died after running through a red light and hitting a bus near North 35th Street and West Capitol Drive, sending five people to the hospital.

Then on Saturday, just after 9:30 p.m. at North 35th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue, another crash resulted from a driver running a red light and hitting a bus. The automobile driver died, and nine others went to the hospital.

...

A battery electric bus costs about $1.6 million to replace and a typical diesel gas truck costs about $650,000 to replace.

first crash totaled a $650,000 diesel bus, second totaled the $1.6 million dollar EV bus.

The streetcar/tram from the first one isn't immune, someone hosed one of those up last year (garbage truck ran a red and nailed the tram).

this argument is stupid, use mixes of transportation to make a good useful system.

I use it weekly and it's set on the floor in a corner, and no lint/dust is building up in that corner after a couple years. I don't really get it either but it works great.

By the way I get teased about it in the Costco thread because everyone buys the expensive/tiny air purifier they sell, but what I've done for decades is just:

$20 box fan:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-2...20201/203072133

$10 for 4 of these 24-inch bungies:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/SmartStraps-24-in-Green-Flat-Strap-Bungee-Cord-with-Hooks-2-pack-330/320682607

$10 each for allergen filters of your choosing:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-20-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Allergen-Plus-Pleated-Furnace-Air-Filter-FPR-7-MERV-11-2-Pack-HDX2P7-012020/314671405

Loop the bungies around the fan and hook them to themselves, like so:

That's been running about 3 months and due for a change. It moves a huge volume of air compared to those little air purifiers and you can prop it up in a corner, and the filters are a huge value since it's not some proprietary size.

Some loving college hipsters tried to say they invented it during covid just because they did the same thing and taped 4 filters into a cube shape, but that just makes the whole thing take up 4x the space. They just wanted to put their dumb names on something. Mine works fine!

Huh, i didn't know R6s were sensitive to tank slappers. Odd.
Either way, mount a steering damper if you're gonna do anything over highway speeds. Dude got lucky.

i do wonder if those techniques are still valid for modern bikes with modern tires.

Yeah the physics of it have not changed, but funnily enough the extreme rigidity compared to bikes of old amplifies wobble as the forces are transferred much more efficiently rather than being lost in frame and fork flex.
Modern materials and design have largely minimized wobble at non-felony speeds but compare how fast and violently a new bike gets to wobbling once it starts over a old one.
