israel will go the way of rhodesia because: a) its security relies on perceived military superiority over its neighbours b) 7 october made it look weak, so it needs to restore deterrence c) "destroying hamas" isn't enough to restore deterrence, so it needs to expand the war d) it couldn't win an expanded war, so it needs the support of the united states and friends e) the united states can't sustain the kind of defence it provided during iran's recent attack, desperately wants out of the middle east, and probably isn't capable of defeating the axis of resistance anyway f) in the meantime, the genocide is making israel increasingly isolated

a friend of mine just got engaged and his soon to be father in law texted him congratulations followed by a massive spiel about how disgusting it was that my friend was turning against israel. he actually used the phrase “made the desert bloom.” a lot of liberal boomer Jews have reflexively supported israel for decades and as the horrific news and images come out of Gaza they have to make a choice. some, like my mom, recoil in horror and start to question whether israel should even exist at all. others double down and dive deeper into the echo chamber.

More and more are seeing this "It is what it is" outlook as not good enough. So of course, but they're still trying to make it seem like history began on October 7th. And that kind of mindset will still work on a lot of people who will be happy to eat up that the US and its vassals are always the definitive good guys all the time. But not enough anymore, because the IDF and the kind of people that settle in Israel are so deranged and enthusiastic about genocide and inflicting suffering on Palestinians that even for people who didn't know anything about this at all til October 7th, it's pretty clear that this isn't a "war". There is no way to go back to the status quo after people seeing so many months of Biden saying he's deeply concerned while handing Israel billions, the IDF and Israeli state propaganda isn't catching on and immediately shutting down conversation like it used to. Things like Blinken sitting on evidence of systemic rape in the IDF, the multiple mass graves... These have been going on for years, but even for people who never knew Palestine was a thing until October 7th, I feel like today more people have an understanding of something being a systemic problem and not an individual problem. Even without any of these sanctions actually happening, it eats at people because they realize no organization does poo poo like this just once, and Biden has made it extremely obvious that this is 100% made possible for years by the USA. That seed got planted in a lot of people's heads over the past few months. Even on a more selfish level, people in the US, even if not consciously threading the needle, are seeing how, hey, grocery prices just about doubled over the past couple of years, I can barely make rent, meanwhile we send $20 billion to Israel every two months so they can keep blowing up civilians. It's incredibly painful because of how long this is going to take from now, and people starting to realize Israel is bad doesn't stop the bombings, or immediately save lives. But seeing any change like this at all is heartening.

Israel isn't helping because they're not saying they want a return to the status quo. They're saying that because of October 7, Gaza needs to be erased from the map, more or less. It can never be allowed to pose a threat to Israel again, or the flow of construction material and humanitarian aid into Gaza allowed this so can't happen again, or the lack of an Israeli presence within Gaza was how this went unnoticed etc.
