axolotl farmer posted:it started out as a X-files thing with an agent seeing 'the pattern' that no one else could see. once they dropped that and ran with the parallel universe thing it got so much better. yeah, when I rewatched it last year I thought of it as x files (and lost, by way of jj), but all the science and conspiracies are real and the writers get to have a lot of fun taking that to its story extremes evobatman posted:Did a rewatch not long ago. When it's good it's really good, but it does have some weak points where season-spanning mysteries are resolved in one or two lines of dialogue. Would do another rewatch in the future. yesss. the alternate intro and the evolving intros are really good the plot getting overly-winding and discarding resolutions to hit story beats does get exhausting. iirc, in classic scifi show on fox fashion, they thought they were canned at least once, so some of the resolutions feel like the writers not wanting to leave fans wondering hahahaha

Had a guy hit me up through FB marketplace requesting an engraved cutting board and three 40mm challenge coins for his girlfriend and two kids. When he came to pick them up, he asked to see my workshop, and when he got a look at my setup he was "Wait can you engrave tools as well?!" Turns out the dude runs a construction company and has $60,000+ in Milwaukee tools, and wanted to engrave his name, and later a logo I whipped up for him on them. 250 tools and $500+ later, he's basically bringing me batches of 50-100 tools at a time, and is building me cabinets and shelves for my workshop. He's got a ton of people already clamoring to get theirs done as well. This isn't really a BIG break, but it's been keeping me busy and is decent cash for a couple hours of work a day. I estimate it's about $25/hr, but I work when I want to, and don't work when I don't want to.

I also tried doing a "2.5D" engrave, where it takes a B&W image and converts it into layers, kinda like a 3D printing slicer, 256 shade images where full white is "ABSOLUTELY DO NOT MARK" and full black is "MARK EVERY TIME", and then it engraves the number of times you tell it, usually 64/128/256 passes. It's super slow, this coin took something like 95 minutes, but in something like brass, the results can be pretty spectacular: That was on a kinda trashed failure of a super cheap engraving coin, but I got a new selection in 5 flavors from a super reputable online vendor. Bronze, Brass, Copper, Cupronickel, and polished Stainless: Feisty-Cadaver posted:gf does custom engraving on the titanium stuff she sells and it's hugely popular. I wish I'd known the ins and outs of fiber lasers before I bought this one, I'd have spent the extra $1000 and bought a MOPA capable unit, as they can do that wild "reproduceable color on titanium, and color on certain types of stainless". I can get color on Ti, with what I have, but it's wildly variable in how it turns out. spookykid fucked around with this message at 14:28 on Apr 27, 2024 |

(lol i know absolutely nothing about this stuff) otoh my wife is into this kind of poo poo too but does it by hand and it takes absolutely forever lol, i'm sure she'd like some sort of more high tech solution where she can just design something and a machine does the rest. but then again i suppose she probably knows about this and prefers to do it by hand (she has a masters in fine art) lol, idk. i like coins too, lots of them are pretty neat
