PC LOAD LETTER posted:Some of it has gone to his lawyers. Some of it is going to his fines. He is also steadily getting more money over time and last time he campaigned he raised over 700 million dollars in 1yr. He already put up bonds on those. He's already paid $250 million out of his pocket and it's not coming back. If he pays it off with his stupid stock (a huge if) that's also his money he's paying. Paying lawyers out of your campaign is relatively straightforward, having a super PAC just give all it's money to the candidate is not going to work. Anyway I'm tired of arguing against these shifting goalposts of what counts as "real" consequences. Clearly your belief that Trump is invincible is unshakable.

You could pick from thousands and thousands of more established brands that have a real benefit to society AND a plan with actual profits but we’re in the worst timeline where he gets a million chances, a Supreme Court bench that even entertains the idea of him being immune (I know this will likely not pass but the fact they’re even debating this is infuriating), and a potential payout of billions for FAILING. Mark Hamill has a throwaway line in The Fall of the House of Usher asking when the devil's bargain shielding trungo and his wretched line from consequences will come due. at the time I thought it was a bit on the nose but goddamn, it really does seem like all the dominoes fall against each other so he can stay afloat as long as possible. not that we're not midway through The Mattering but the inertia he carries is hard to wrap my head around

The defense doesn't seem to get the argument that the prosecution is clearly going for, Trump was directing a conspiracy to illegally coordinate campaign contributions using Pecker and Cohen as his henchmen. That is conspiracy to commit election fraud, even if no money changed hands it's still an illegal in-kind donation that Trump clearly directed to be covered up. I really hope Trump is dumb enough to testify because he is going to walk into a giant trap if he doesn't understand what the underlying crime is at all.

So did Pecker's whole testimony and cross-examination really basically boil down to: P: "Yeah, we killed the stories for Trump's campaign" Defence: "Isn't this just business as usual for you though?" P: "Nope, we did it to help manipulate the campaign" Prosecution: "You normally would run that story?" P: "gently caress yeah! That story was GOLD! Flushed so much money down the drain killing it."

It's so loving funny to me that if the expense had been listed on the books as 'hush money paid to porn star' there'd be nothing happening here Seems to me that if you're in any kind of organised crime you're better off just listening 'money from my cocaine empire' on your tax forms. At least then they have to prove you're running coke, and you haven't handed them a free tax lie.

Randalor posted:So did Pecker's whole testimony and cross-examination really basically boil down to: Not quite, it's that it was being done at the direction of Trump. Pecker can do whatever he wants with his own publication, including smearing all Trump's rivals and only running pro-Trump stories. The issue is the Trump "I would like you to do us a favor", that is clear cut crime. Trump is going to want to believe that Cohen is a liar liar that had gone rouge and Trump had no idea about all of this, it'f that is true though, why was he covering it up in his business records? What was the litimiate purpose for giving this lawyer you think is so awful so much money right around when all these contracts were signed?
