bawk posted:I dunno about Steam reviews but this has been gettings 8s/9s/10s from review sites. I've been following it for a while and can't wait to play it tonight. The aesthetic is top-notch, the music is wonderful, the enemies hit hard but the shells balance things out a fair bit, but overall... The combat feels fuckin' bad so far. Feels like a mixture of Broken Straight Sword from Dark Souls + the low-adaptability heavy roll from DS2. You have a little bit of recovery time after the roll (to discourage spamming, I'd guess) but enemies have that Elden Ring tracking thing going on. When you're attacking, you lock in the direction you're facing during the animation, but when enemies are attacking, they're pivoting to face your position. Multiple times now I've died to a basic crab because it'll do a clearly-telegraphed two-hit combo, I'll dodge through the second attack, and it'll just pivot/smack me, then hit me again while I'm mashing the dodge button to roll away. The shells are okay, but their whole gimmick is essentially Weapon Durability, so you'd think the game would encourage you to use a powerful dodge in its place. It really seems like it wants you to be using, breaking, and scrambling for shells mid-combat instead. It'll get better with level-ups + the accessibility options are plentiful, so it's not like I can't mold the game into the shape of the thing I want to play, but it's so weird to play a game in 2024 that feels so sluggish.

another crab's treasure actively wants you to be using your shells in combat for things like parrying and absorbing blows you would likely not do well against otherwise. a successful parry doesn't use up durability for your shell and it will build up the stagger bar on the enemy. the game even directly tells you in a variety of loading tips that if you're not using your shell then you're not going to be getting everything out of combat. it punishes trying to spam the roll because it wants you to get a feel for the attacks and not just rapidly hit a button to move away. it's straight up been one of the most fun combat systems i've played in a game in a while, but you have to 100% engage it on it's terms and use the resources it gives you, such as your shells, your special abilities and barbed hooks.

I think the combat is alright, a bit floaty at times and a little repetitive. Dodging is still the most powerful defensive move, at least for me, plenty of I-frames if you time it right. Just can't panic dodge. I don't understand how to parry though. I've tried blocking at the exact right time and I'm sure I've done it but it just blocks? I'm probably badly underleveled because I didn't really waste any time leveling just went straight through. As a result I turned enemy health slightly down just to make the whole thing take less time, and also turned off loss of microplastics on death for the same reason, so I could level easily without laboriously backtracking. I'm also confused where to go after killing the duchess, if someone can enlighten me that would be nice.

I beat crab souls just now. I didn’t really enjoy the combat as I could never get the parry timing and there is a lot of tracking attacks. I did enjoy the area design and the story so I would recommend for that alone. Some of the glitches are super annoying as one boss can kick you through the floor. Halo 3 sniper trauma also returned

This game is super good, its worth mentioning its made by Level 5 (dark cloud/professor layton) and I've sadly seen almost no one talk about it. The combat is fun and arcadey, there's all sorts of loot, and customizing your mech is fun. It also has a surprisingly in depth story and rpg elements like an explorable city full of npcs, and a crapload of fully animated cutscenes. I'm liking it a lot so far and it seems to have had almost no marketing push for it. https://twitter.com/DominicTarason/status/1783314332748546454 free hubcaps fucked around with this message at 12:52 on Apr 27, 2024 |

I wouldn't even say almost, I'd say literally zero marketing. Likely not helped due to Level 5 closing their NA branch back in 2020, but even taking that into account it's kind of insane they just dropped a major release - one that'd be potentially able to sell well at that, we're not talking pushed out the door to die - completely out of nowhere and say nothing.

No marketing, no demo, no proper example gameplay video on the steam page. I could go looking up gameplay from the last few years of the JP-only original version, but I am incredibly lazy. 39 pieces of day 1 DLC totalling 250% base game cost. But I guess that's just the world now.

And as to not waste posting space (or to waste posting space even more depending on how you look at it) a new game released yesterday and it may be among the most "uuuuhhhhhhhhhhh" things I have seen for sale. Have a blast, and always play responsibly and respectfully. ᵀʰᵉᶦʳ ʷᵒʳᵈˢ, ⁿᵒᵗ ᵐᶦⁿᵉ. It's trying to go for a "gender neutral" approach but I imagine it's not going to be easy keeping a low age rating for a game like this. I played a version of this at one of the Demo fests and while it's not bad I don't know if any game like this could ever catch on in the long term, but regardless if you ever wanted to get in on the ground floor while people are likely to be playing it then there is no better time than now.

What makes sets it apart is how RPG-like it is. The characters have defined skill trees that change how they play. That makes the powerups you want for them different too. You're encouraged to move around the map a lot more than VS. Progression feels good. Might wear off after a while, but it completely too over my afternoon and I just wanna play more.
