I like the idea that a bunch of draftniks copy each other to come to a consensus and then people give grades based on that consensus. It seems so childish to be like you took a guy high who I had low, F-, you took a guy low who I had high, A++!!

Yeah I don't give a poo poo about draft grades lol The draft is funny because the public will be like "oh my God that's a reaaaach", and then it comes out like a couple of days later that like a conga line of teams were about to take that player one to two picks later.

People like to lmao at specialists but bad special teams sinks seasons and gets head coaches fired just as bad as a bad defense or offense these days. He's a gun talent and has game changing kicking ability. I had 0 issues with the bears pick.

Half the reason why the Raiders didn't pick #1 overall for most of the 2000's was because they had a fantastic special teams unit.

It is absolutely this, it feels like everyone is just copying each other's homework, very few people take risks that aren't dumb hot-takes for engagement. I have never seen a college game and I could easily make a convincing mock draft just by aggregating 5 other writers. I like to review old draft articles or discussions with the benefit of a few years of hindsight just to see how consistently wrong they all are and how meaningless any of this analysis is. The consensus mock aggregates are shockingly accurate and decent indicators. The success of individual draft pick of course varies wildly (Ex/ any OL prospect that goes to Coach Callahan is going to have a higher chance of succeeding than an OL prospect that goes to somebody like Coach Cable) but the overall exercise of grades isn’t without merit. And most importantly, it’s fun

Forgive me if anyone else has brought this up, but isn't the "always trade down" crowd missing the obvious that this is only a functional strategy if you have someone willing to give a fair value for the trade down? Takes two to tango and all that. The NFL is very chummy so it wouldn't be surprising if there were plenty of times a team would maybe wish to trade down, but none of their friend-teams were interested, so you just make the pick. different but related thing There was a guy on kevin clark's podcast talking about how you should value a draft by the second contract values of the picks, which is fine but the value of the rookie deal is huge part of why a pick in itself is valuable. Teams really like a functional player on a cheap deal. Even if their second contract is just at the median, those initial cheap years are great ROI. Also ignores developmental guys whose second deals will be lower Dejan Bimble fucked around with this message at 00:39 on Apr 29, 2024 |
