It's such a weird doubling down. Yes if you live on a farm with lots of animals you will end up having to put a few down, usually out of sympathy and compassion to end suffering, but the story with the dog isn't that it was suffering or in pain. Instead it just wasn't a good hunter she she decided to kill it, and then figured while she was in a killing mood she should kill a goat too because why waste a good time. Did she really think it would make her look sympathetic?

She failed to realize that most Americans like animals (especially domesticated pets), or at a minimum are ambivalent towards them. Most folks I've known who actively disliked dogs were fearful of them due to childhood experience or trauma, and their reaction was more "That's a cute dog but please keep it away from me, I'm scared of them." I can think of 2 people I've met that just disliked dogs in general, and they were deeply weird in other ways - they saw dogs as an unrewarding time sink, an extra source of messiness in the owner's home, etc.

ive known plenty of people who dont like dogs but the bulk of them are from or are the children of people from countries where dogs are not kept as pets. and it makes sense! i went to high school with a kid from ghana and he was like "its so weird that you let wild animals live in your house". i get it. but dogs rock.

I've known people who don't like dogs/are scared of dogs but none of those people have ever had a violent reaction to dogs and wished to see them dead. The only time I have ever heard someone being glad about a dog being put down is usually after a story about some dog attacking a child and the dog being put down afterwards. By all accounts Noem's dog never attacked a child and needed to be put down. Also security needs to make sure Noem gets nowhere near Biden's pooches (though hearing the story about how the dogs like to bite the Secret Service maybe they will let Noem in)

Yeah, people with genuine phobias of dogs generally react in a different way, just don't want to be around the animal or something. It makes them very anxious. This person took a gun, slowly and methodically, to a dog and blasted away. I'm not saying you specifically are doing this, but this conversation will get incredibly stupid once Wolf Blitzer or some other big media dude tries to equivocate between "shooting a puppy like you're Hannibal Lecter" and "dogs that have to be put down due to uncontrollable violence towards small children". I have a genuine difficulty understanding people who view pets as property, not buddies. It's hypocritical since I eat meat, but I'd make buddies with a chicken too I guess, it'd just be awful to imagine eating them later on. But pets in my life have always been members of the family, you care about their stupid antics and want them to be happy.

I don't know many farmers but I am guessing this is not an actual regular occurrence. A dog that won't hunt still is worth having around, a farmer wouldn't just kill a dog because it wasn't performing to it's expectation.

My grandpas farm often had dogs dumped there, usually pregnant females, so there were always puppies about. I think the record was 17 from two moms who wandered in at roughly the same time. We just fed them and put up a ‘free puppies to good home’ sign. No shooting or drowning (usual way people used to get rid of unwanted kittens/puppies) required. The only time you’d ever shoot a dog is if it was acting extremely weird or aggressive towards people or your livestock, out of fear of rabies.

In fact I know of one family of Black Angus cattle herders who used dogs to help move the herds around. They had a border collie who was great at it, so when she started getting old and slowing down they got another. Unfortunately she was a dud and sucked at the job. They would dunk on her constantly for being useless but it was with affection. She basically got downgraded to a pet. Any normal person can find a place for a "useless" dog, whether it's finding proper training, a different job, downgrade to family pet, or find another home to take them in. And if there's no choice but euthanize them, they'll find a vet. And if they DO have to shoot an animal because it's in pain and going to die anyway, they'll use something besides a loving shotgun

Kristi Noem wants people to stop calling on her to be charged with animal cruelty. She says she has the legal right to kill puppies under South Dakota law because lethal force is allowed to defend livestock and cricket had killed a chicken - which is livestock and allows for the use of lethal force. The goat murder was justifiable self-defense because it had headbutted her children. https://twitter.com/KristiNoem/status/1784631108207849781
