It's not that complicated. Just run docker containers for the services you need, radarr for movies, sonarr for tv, sabznd for downloading, and plex/jellyfin/emby to stream them.

Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Yeah media servers are super simple with hardly any research, you just need to tune your raspberry pi to turbo encabulation mode and ensure that its modial integrators are aligned to reduce magneto-reluctance and increase capacitive directance. Then you just fire up the hydrocoptic marzlevanes and turn the phase detractors to CM-only mode and it'll just work.

These representations of Plex must be put out by the likes of FACT or some other anti-piracy body, because they’re so unnecessarily convoluted. I’ve used a Plex server for more than a decade and my friend who also has one thinks I’m stupid for having it read from my NAS. I just download a torrent, put the file on my NAS, Plex indexes it. That’s it. My friend runs Plex on a server that also runs a torrent client and it has sonarr as a front end that lets you subscribe to a series, have it automatically download, and show up like it’s on a streaming service.

I'm sure you need a sonic screwdriver for all that stack stuff. There's plenty for me to watch on the various Roku channels and if there's something I particularly want to watch that I can't get from there or interweb video sites, a bit of googling & a site with a 1377 in the name can normally find it for me.

If Plex can track what episode I'm on that would be an advantage to my current system of my TV playing them from NAS because I've abandoned watching a series before because I couldn't be bothered to work out what episode to watch next

Pistol_Pete posted:Canada of all places doing the "there is no more land to build houses on!" is so loving funny. On the other hand, their only solution seems to be "more urban sprawl". It's a real problem because just spreading out for miles in every direction and filling it with low density housing is super unsustainable. Those houses bring in less tax revenue than it takes to service all of the roads and other infrastructure needed to serve them - so higher density areas, which are mainly lived in by less well-off people, end up subisidising the suburbs (where richer people live) through their property taxes. What we need is density but Canadians are loving allergic to it*. That said, more cities etc. (including I believe the province of Ontario where almost 40% of Canadians live) now seem to be passing amendments to their zoning laws which do things like give a blanket allowance for all existing lots to now have 3 housing units on them, allowing for densification. Of course you still have to have homeowners actually opt to add units onto their land which is expensive and difficult on many suburban lots. What we really need to do is stop building more developments which are solely full of single-family detached homes and build actual medium density developments. Another thing that might make sense is to "do a Milton Keynes" and build a commuter town outside of Toronto, with a high-speed rail link... but Canadians are loving allergic to passenger rail too which is completely ludicrous considering the geography and spread-out nature of Canada. *There's the possible exception of Montreal where mid-density housing exists and is good. If you didn't need to speak French to live there, I might consider it.
