Secks Cauldron posted:...I kind of like it. It has this kitschy late 80s/early 90s feel. I also appreciate how all the dudes have pec baring outfits I mean, you could say some of these videos are construed to cater to specific fetishes. It's kinda sad that music videos aren't as big of a thing anymore. Also also, this thread is improving my mood considerably. I guess I'm past the point of staring into the abyss, I have become the abyss.

But "My Girl", from 1965, has the same drat melody, so why are they getting any credit at all?? What part of "I'm Too Sexy' matches the melody of "My Girl?"

I'm pretty sure the Whitetown song was built around a sample, but in a sense that there was some crate-digging and recontextualisation, where the Dua Lipa song just makes me think "lol, remember Whitetown? That was a catchy hook, huh?" Todd in the Shadows breaks down Your Woman really well. You have no idea just how catchy that hook was.

mazzi Chart Czar posted:The right answer is: "I took a pill in Ibiza." I was originally agreeing with everyone else saying St. Anger, but no, its this. I remember hearing this back when it first came out and thought it was pretty catchy but I didnt understand some of the lyrics. This is the only song Ive heard from this guy, what does he mean he already blew his shot? I thought maybe there was another more famous Mike Posner who he reminded old people of, but I wasnt going to look it up because clearly he wasnt that famous. Id forgotten all about him until I saw some update a few months ago on his instagram about how hes changed for the better since he first wrote it. He goes through the lyrics and compares them with his current life. Instead of driving a sports car to prove hes a baller and spending a million dollars on shoes he now drives a 4Runner, donated his Jordan collection, and only cares about proving himself to God. I remember thinking he sounded extremely lame but whatever, good for him I guess. I had no idea how lame and uncool he truly was though, until I read this. And listened to the original version, that is embarrassing on a level far above just a regular bad song. https://www.instagram.com/p/C3TdwEHNgte/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

It's Starships "We Built this City" I went to see Starship at the height of this song. I was there for Night Ranger but you do what you need, right? Starship opened with "We Built This City", they closed with "We Built This City", and they came out for this hilarious encore with "We Built This City" that no one asked for, I think in fact everyone was booing.

Welp, that does it. I regularly forget this song existed, but Witch Doctor has to be the winner of this topic, hands down. How could it not be? That 'song' is unbearably embarrassing, obnoxious, and problematic to boot. Honourable mention to the 'little polka dot bikini' song.

Dr. Quarex posted:Conversely, literally every time a 2 Unlimited song pops up on Sirius XM I find myself unable to respond in any way other than turning the volume all the way up and furiously bopping my head Early 90s Eurodance was exactly the time period I'd go to school discos in a tatty community centre, go loving nuts to 2 Unlimited in a dark room in a pair of LA Lights and Global Hypercolour t-shirt and emerge dripping in sweat and loving neck a 25p bottle of off-brand fruit punch. Absolutely great times. I have a friend who was a rockabilly teen and he loving loved The Cartoons Witch Doctor - he just enjoyed that the song was in the public consciousness. redshirt posted:It's Starships "We Built this City" I kind of like this song as a bit of 80s excess. I feel like this is something I've only ever seen happen in an episode of Daria but never seen in reality and have always assumed it was just something that happened on TV exclusively He was always a super smart and curious guy, but basically, just like other teenagers get into sub-cultures: he was into rock music, but didn't fit in with the metalheads or grunge kids, got into bands like The Cramps, and from there compliations of garage rock, Northern Soul and rockabilly. His older brother is a musician with an interest in early rock and roll too, so he had a head start. He used to go to school with an empty cigarette packet rolled up in his sleeve because he didn't smoke and accepted an award for Academic achievement dressed like that.
