RoboBoogie posted:i have never seen a president destroy their chance for re-election. he is really banking on the "do you really want trump back in office?" when he barely won the last election It's been their strategy for almost a decade and the only reason it worked last time was because Trump's honeymoon period was over and he publicly bumbled the Covid response (it's kinda hard to get people to vote for you if you are actively getting their family killed). Dems needed a strategy and an appeal to something that wasn't "We aren't as bad as the other guys) because what motivates voters to head out to vote is either a good plan they can believe in or a slick publicity campaign and the Dems can't do either anymore. Hell they could try to spin the narrative that their aid to Israel is saving lives but instead all they do is put out a statement about their act then get super mad when people call them out for sucking. The one time they could have gained by doing nothing again was these protests. As long as they didn't spill over into riots the situation was more or less contained and people would have probably lost interest eventually, thinking it was just students being students. Instead everyone sent in a massive force to kick everyone out and to detain a bunch of peaceful protesters. The Dems could have just waited for Republicans to start doing what they always do then quietly dispersed the crowds themselves a few weeks later but no, they called us mean names, they gotta go .

mcclay posted:I don't want to engage in 'no investigation, no right to speak' but I'm kinda confused at the situation. It seemed that when the Cal Poly students occupied the buildings the cops could not force them out, but last night it looks like they left the occupied buildings to hold a fortified point on the quad? I'm curious as to why, since it seems to me like they were at their strongest inside the fortified buildings. Leaving them seems like a kind of odd strategic decision, so I'm curious as to what the rationale behind it was. also curious if anyone has more info

Not to get to lib brained, and Bernie was the key in the lock for 20 years or whatever. But fascism brain is abuser brain. Those that should know their place have challenged them so no compromise can be made and they must be punished even though the smart thing to do would be to let it burn itself out and deal with the trouble makers later

the concessions Brown is offering is that a group of up to 5 people will get to meet with a subcommittee selected by the Brown Corporation Board and present a proposal for a divestment policy in a few months, that proposal will then be brought to another committee, that committee will then present their recommendations to the board, the board will then decide whether or not to vote on those recommendations, and they will then vote on it if they feel like it, the process in total taking six months, more or less in exchange the encampment will disband and all other protest activities of any kind will cease for the remainder of the academic year hilariously, lopsidedly bad it will also probably work and was all they ever needed to do, if every university admin was this smart the protests would already be over the protest organizers at Brown are publicly celebrating it as a victory lmao
