An absolute goddamn shitload of people have gotten their student loans forgiven and more have had their payments reduced to 5% of discretionary income (read: nothing), and yet we still have this talking point. Even on this specific case, not getting into the polling someone else noted (and people constantly notes) where there's a massive disconnect between perception of personal situation and perception of the economy, your constant refrain of "their lying eyes" is completely ignoring an actual, genuine, serious improvement in people's individual, personal material conditions.

Perhaps it is your take on individual material conditions that is wrong.

Perhaps you are correct, and the people rating the economy as bad are as wrong as you claim that I am.

I'm very glad that Biden has resurrected the PSLF program, especially retroactively. But here's the current outstanding student-loan debt as of a few months ago:

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/07/politics/student-loan-debt-forgiveness-biden/index.html

Yes, it's an "actual, genuine, serious improvement" in the material conditions of those ~9 percent of loan-holders whose loans were forgiven--and yet still a burden to those with private loan debt and/or who don't qualify for PSLF. Same for those formerly on Medicaid who now have Obamacare subsidies yet who still can't afford to meet their deductibles.

eta:

CNN's piece was published on March 29, 2024 and used Q4 2023 numbers for its chart. I know that there have been additional loans forgiven since then.

etaa:

As far as (publicly financed) student loans being limited to 5 percent of one's income, I would point out that that's still considerably more than people paid during the forbearance period in which interest didn't accrue; that interest is capitalized so that the loan amount grows in proportion to the lesser-amount payments; and that, like the 8.5 percent limit of income permissible toward insurance premiums (but not toward insurance deductibles) it is based on gross income, rather than net income, which makes a considerable difference in people's economic burdens.

As far as the disconnect between people's own economic situations & their views of the economy, as I understand it a lot of it is based on the longstanding tradition of partisan sentiment (democrats rating the economy as poor when the gop holds the presidency & vice versa) and a lot of it is based on where one falls on the economic scale.

Unsurprisingly, those earning less money find the current costs of shelter & food to be burdensome while those earning more money might say they're able to meet their needs financially while also thinking that the economy sucks because those costs are now higher than they've been, according to Gallup:

quote:

As has been the case in previous readings, Americans’ reports of high prices as a hardship have differed significantly based on annual household income. Those in lower-income households (76%) are more likely than those in middle-income households (64%) and higher-income households (54%) to say price increases are causing them hardship. However, income differences are even more pronounced when looking just at those saying the impact is severe. Lower-income Americans (30%) are three times as likely as high-income adults (10%) and almost twice as likely as middle-income adults (16%) to characterize high prices as a severe hardship.

A NYT piece last November about the disconnect:

quote:

Many said their own finances were good enough — they had jobs, owned houses, made ends meet. But they felt as if they were “just getting by,” with “nothing left over.” Many felt angry and anxious over prices and the pandemic and politics.

Those feelings may be driving attitudes about the economy, economists speculated, sounding more like their colleagues from another branch of social science, psychology.

“The pandemic shattered a lot of illusions of control,” Professor Stevenson said. “I wonder how much that has made us more aware of all the places we don’t have control, over prices, over the housing market.”

Inflation weighed heavily on voters — nearly all of them mentioned frustration at the price of something they buy regularly.

***

In response to the pandemic, the United States built an extensive welfare state, and it has since been dismantled
. While wealth has increased for families across the income spectrum, data shows, and there are indications that inequality could be shrinking, the changes have been small relative to decades of growing inequality, leading to a sense for some that the system is rigged.

E: I just googled "thca provo" cause it's the only city I could remember in Utah and I'm assuming weed is super illegal in Utah but there are shops selling THCa weed there.

Probably because earlier in the grow cycle plants are high in THCa and low in THC and the THCa slowly changes to THC as it matures. I would imagine the growers are harvesting early so they can get more yield per year knowing that it doesn't matter all that much since everybody is going to smoke it and it'll turn into THC anyway, at least with their plants destined to stay flower and not be turned into edibles.

Yeah, that's the case until someone gets a bug up their butt about it. I'm in Louisiana. THC gummies, seltzers and whatnot are currently legal except now it might be taken away because of a bill that's sponsored by leaders of the alcohol industry. People who struggle with alcohol addiction are finding help through edibles and it's eating into the alcohol industry profits, you see.

You can read about it on Columbia's own website! They have a whole section dedicated to it, and how they've all learned and grown from those turbulent times

quote:

Columbia is a far different place today than it was in the spring of 1968 when protesters took over University buildings amid discontent about the Vietnam War, racism and the University’s proposed expansion into Morningside Park. After a weeklong standoff, New York City Police stormed the campus and arrested more than 700 people. The fallout dogged Columbia for years.

It took decades for the University to recover from those turbulent times. Columbia now has one of the most socio-economically diverse student bodies among its peer institutions. It has added a new campus designed to be open to the community and pursues fields of inquiry unheard of a half-century ago. Columbia is commemorating the 50th anniversary of those long-ago events with a deep dive of scholarship and exhibits chronicling what happened then and its effects today.

Cannabis consumers and producers are often not going to want to remove this aspect from their cannabis. We like it.

Some things though might be changed. I stumbled on this recently and the skunky smell that was previously assumed to be some sort of terpene has been isolated and identified as something not a terpene and this raises the prospects for breeding strains that lack this skunky smelling compound:

It's going to be interesting in that the most likely outcome given polling is that the Dems take back the House, lose the Senate, and lose the Presidency. There are a number of polls showing states with a noticeable gap between the Senate race and the Presidential.
