Yeah his design does just look inherently more sinister than the other main angels though. (outside of the memory-holed SMT4 designs)

https://personacentral.com/smtvv-nahobino-form-screenshots/

Going to miss Nahobino's long flowing locks when he gets a haircut / dye job in this one.
I think both the old and new Nahobino designs' costumes are a little too busy but the hair always looked good in motion.
A little disappointed to hear that the new route only features one (1) new city area, though hardly surprising given past Atlus re-releases and at least it looks like the areas from base V are being expanded and tweaked.

Also, just some trivia:
The other new demon featured besides Nahobeeho, Amabie, is a youkai associated with warning about disease, that became popular in Japan during the height of the coronavirus. It was pretty common to see more conventional anime style cute depictions of her as stuff like little statues as good luck charms or as the mascot of informational campaigns promoting hygiene things like masks and social distancing and so on.

https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/apr/10/amabie-japanese-twitter-sensation-yokai-pandemic-defeating-monster-hope-to-japan
So not a huge surprise to see prominently featured in an SMT game developed during corona, also Doi released the design a few years ago way before SMTVV was announced.

Would love to hear one day the inside story of what happened to all the Atlus old guard like Kaneko, Koji Okada and Tadashi Satomi* and why they left the company. When it comes to both SMT and Persona, the new games are pretty good but they are missing a certain something that the old games had.

He's done a few things since, like launching the Caligula Effect series, which I happen to like quite a bit despite its rough edges.

Yeah it's bizarre how they make it seem like an ARPG at first with you dashing and attacking enemies.

I think they allow you to do the ARPG for as long as you like, getting hits in and dodging, before then initiating the TRPG battles.

They've stolen the combat system from the most recent Trails games I guess, just lets you mash down wandering mobs easily in realtime and switch to turn based for anything that needs it.

I would honestly prefer if it were just straight up action RPG lol

I'd have preferred for the game to integrate its changes into the main game like Royal or Maniax with additional side content to flesh out whatever backstory or additions they added. This is likely to lead to the main story of V to feel more like a dead end and for the "real" game to be the Vengeance content. Early route splits also tend to make me wary because you're making decisions about the endgame while not having any accurate grounding in what the choices you're making actually are...unless you've already played the main game.

I mean that is the stated intended purpose. You play through the original version and then Vengeance route which is supposedly building off what you know.

The closest comparison isn't Royal or Maniax, it's SMT4:Apocalypse. Like to an almost comical degree because it follows the exact same "It's the same plot only a twist means new gods come around and throw everything off" concept.

The big things in here:

-The African demons all look great. Hopefully we get more new mythologies into the game.

-New dungeon related to the Shekinah Glory is Shakan. Which from a quick search seems to mean "to dwell". So I guess it's where the Glory dwells?

-Toggleable Miracles. I don't remember if there were any in the base game that you would have liked to disable but a nice option anyways.

-Estoma... except it costs Magutsuchi gauge and again, iirc dodging enemies wasn't an issue unless in tight areas. Why not make it just a spell again?

-Fiend DLC now allows to legally use Demi-Fiend, albeit it's not clear of you can recruit him or he's just a guest for some quests.

-Boss rematch with the option to increase levels, level cap of 150 and a NG+ that makes enemies stronger. Putting these ones here cause it makes me wonder if they're gonna adjust the level formula to not have as much as an effect.

SMT Franchise out there really earning that MA-17 rating again feels like. I knew if I waited on the enhanced version, like I've learned to for Atlus games for years at this point that I wouldn't regret it. Just the improved look of SMT5:V in general over the Switch-locked base version seems worth it IMO.

Feels like a really busy summer if you're into JRPG's and Asian genre fiction gaming in general. Kind of reminding me of 2017 a little, but for the current generation of gaming.

I'm just trying to go through life without looking stupid.

It's not working out too well...
Two questions for the thread:

1.) With the classic MT/SMT games, what's the best version to play for each game? I know that Megami Tensei titles (the two games that came out before SMT), there was the SNES remake that came out (Kyūyaku Megami Tensei).

With SMT 1/2/If, I know there's translations for the SNES versions, but while there's an English patch for the PS1 version of SMT1, there doesn't seem to be one for SMT2 or If. Should I stick to SNES versions, for all, or is the PS1 version of SMT1 worth a try?

2.) How easy/hard are the Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha games, and do they emulate well?

I read a LP of the 1st game since I heard it was old and awkward to play so IDK for that one. Then I did play the 2nd game on PS2 and it was fairly easy as I'm bad at video games but I did manage to clear it fine.

IIRC there are no major differences between the versions of the SNES era games.

Yeah the combat in the first Raidou game kind of sucks, there's too many encounters and you have to recruit demons by button mashing. The 2nd one revamped all those systems and is great though, one of my favorite games in the franchise. Good to emulate though. Being action games, the boss battles focus around dodging enemy attack patterns and such, but they're not very hard games. I do recommend checking out the archived LP of the first game at some point though, since the plot is cooler than 2 in a fun/campy sort of way. You don't really need to know the plot of 1 to play 2.

kyuuyakus smoother and with better smt2 era QoL like, having a comp map but imo the cool aesthetics of the nes ones (ie the cute pixel portrait status page icons of 1 and the shop cutins for 2) get basically completely flattened in kyuuyaku, especially the level up theme in mt2

also ps1 smt1 is, much more smooth and less clunky than snes smt1 (gba smt1 also has a tl now via backporting the official ios tl into the gba rom and this has extra lore but gba crust), though snes smt2 actually has that added QoL that'd be backported into kyuuyaku, theres lately an updated patch for the old snes 2 tl that uses modern locs for demon races and stuff too https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6712/, it might still be a bit jarring going from ps1 1 -> snes 2

This is funny, they’re straight up removing SMTV from the eShop once Vengeance comes out. They’ve never done that before have they? Like Persona 5 was still readily available after Royal released (and was even a part of those free games early PS5 buyers got access to) but for this they’re like “oh no we don’t want anyone accidentally playing the old bad one”
