Meanwhile, in Alberta:

The provincial government is mooting a bill to let it remove any municipal government it doesn't like. This comes on the heel of the bill that will disallow the feds to provide funding to municipalities or universities without going through the province.

Also, the provincial government is eliminating funding for the low income transit pass. This used to be done as part of Alberta Works and AISH, and then when transit was removed from those programs it became a separate program, and now you can't afford any transit if you're poor. This only affects Edmonton and Calgary of course.

Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi's statement on the transit pass:

I'm not sure why, but the UCP government just backed off on the low-income transit funding cut. Maybe because one of their interns told them that income support is indeed a provincial and not municipal responsibility.

It's just such a transparent attempt at punishing Calgary and Edmonton for not voting for enough/any UCP MLAs.

I'm not an economist but it seems to me that, if the market were as dire as Per Bank (also lmao of course the fucker's name is bank, which apparently means noise) claimed it was, that profits would be flat, or at the very least, down. And yet despite all the terrible things he insists are so awful for business, they're pulling in record profits.

An Afghan employee made this same argument when I asked why he wouldn't emigrate to canada. "If I leave, who will fix my country?"

I mean, he lives here NOW but it was still a noble thought.

The problem with a lawblaws boy cott is that food is what people call a staple, that means that you need it to exist in society and in the case of food - live.

That's what I don't get.

Like people that shop at shoppers or lawblaws aren't doing it because they want to pay more, or there's some brand identity tricking them. They're doing it because they don't live close to a budget grocer, or own a car for cosco, and need food to live?

That isn't a strategy internet activists!

I have mixed feelings about the boycott because I think it's not really going to be effective, but on the other hand, it does feel like it's getting picked up by some news, which is probably what might matter more.

I think the average joe is probably not going to change their purchasing habits even if they know Loblaws is ripping them off - either for the reason you mention, or just through apathy and habit. I'll admit to shopping at a loblaws over a food basics because of habit & offerings, so I'm sure there's some people who might just need a bit of a suggestion to double check their alternatives, but otherwise yeah, I don't think most people have the flexibility, and switching from one megacorp to another (lmao when people suggest grocery shopping at walmart) seems kind of silly of a solution.

But again, it's probably more of a boycott of messaging then it is making a meaningful impact on Loblaws' bottom line.

I've seen a few people online who admitted they constantly shopped at Loblaw stores out of habit, and it wasn't until the boycott that they actually looked at what other businesses sold groceries in their area. So at least in some cases, it is just brand identity/brand loyalty getting people to shop there against their better interests.

A fair amount of the boycott material does try to draw attention to all the stores the parent owns, but yeah.
