I will never have a meta build and I will never buy the cold shoulder unless I just feel like it, fashion souls is a lifestyle not a hobby.

But in terms of general advice for precious resources: now that I've built my excavator, does it make sense to roll on all five pieces just so I can have a full set of three star power armor with a set bonus?

oh absolutely. even if you aren't looking for anything in particular getting a weapons or ammo weight reduction star is useful

Heartwarming success stories :allears:
Don't bother with picking rad flowers, the queen drops random stable fluxes and soon enough you won't know where to put the things.

When does a build fall into place?
At lvl 35 pick Escape Artist, a few levels of Sneak and a silenced Handmade.
Put on every scrap of Unyielding (non power) armor no matter what it is. For each one you wear while staying at 19% life, you can drop one lvl of Sneak.
Scour vendors or make some friends to get mutations going without going broke.
If that tickles your fancy, Commando is the best first build imo.

If it's too high maintenance for you (irradiating yourself to 19% hp every time after dying), go for Overeater power armor with an automatic melee weapon or a machine gun.

Right oh, rolling away. As an aside, most of the 3 star effects are pretty anemic, so now I'm sitting here wondering if I should reroll the ones that are especially anemic (toxic, for example), or if I should save my mats because the alternatives are so mid.

As a completionist, I really wish there was an item tag that showed whether a weapon or piece of armor in 76 had more scrap-derived plans on it. I started writing a small list, but realized I'm not that sort of completionist. It's especially annoying with stuff that can't be crafted.

You don't need any of that stuff they're talking about. That's only if you want to absolutely dismantle and game and kill everything in 3 seconds. The game is easy enough that you can just get a pretty ok set of power armor and your favorite weapon and never die again. Maybe pop in the discord for a set of the mutations to make things a little easier too. Then if you want you can grind for the "I broke the game" set later.

You don't have to worry about late game poo poo at all. It's probably the easiest Fallout game that you can get into without worrying about min-max building your characters. With my current character I've just been picking S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats as I feel like I need them.

yeah it's a super forgiving system, if you make some bad perk choices or change your mind about what you want to do that's fine you need gobs of junk perk cards to grind up for legendary perks anyway, just keep leveling

my only gripe about this is it still isn't presented or explained well in-game at all.

You've got to know, to understand,
Baby, take me by my hand,
I'll lead you to the promised land.
I decided to start Fallout 4 again in survival mode. I felt like I was just romping around a theme park.

Anyway all went super well to start. Had a great first day in the wasteland. Set up shop at red rocket near sanctuary so I could create a little zone of influence after escorting Garvey back. I've got a bunch of materials, a bed and a water pump. Had a nice sleep.

Day two I found another armour battery then went to a farm and met some nice people. Figured I'd do them a favour. I got encumbered and told dogmeat to sit so I could actually catch him, but I forgot to tell him to come with me again. Anyway I'm like where the hell is this dog not paying attention looking for the console command that won't even work in survival and a raider comes out of the trees and throws a Molotov at me. I had enough time to think "hope this doesn't kill me" as it sailed through the air and then killed me.

10/10 game is way better now.

How are you supposed to keep track of where your companions are in FO4? I'm always afraid I'll forget where I sent someone and will have to manually search the settlements.

Also "Dogmeat found something". Great. Wish the ui would indicate where he was standing.

Some general FO76 advice for new players who plan to stick around:

Bethesda lies about everything with this game. Over the years they've promised: offline, modding, 4 star legendaries, persistent workshops on private servers, a new camp pet system and much more.

Shelters are a broken mess. Don't buy them. You can't place allies, crops, anything that generates resources or utilize a timer. The giant casino shelter is limited to 5 slot machines total.

The atom shop's photos and descriptions are pretty deceptive. Double check what you want is actually in the bundle and does what you think it does.

The only build that has been consistently usable over the years is the bloodied commando. Bethesda's balance changes over the years have been clumsy at best. Every time I've gotten something like shotguns, pistols, energy weapons, etc working it they patch that to corral me into the variety of fixers, railways, and legacy junk everyone else uses.

Tale as old as time. Welcome to the end of most survival runs.

It does get to be a lot of fun when you get past some of the early molotov stuff. The only place it gets repetitive is if you try to link up settlements and have to run back and forth a lot to try and defend. I ended up taking the "no rads in water" perk for the first time so I could use rivers like an express lane. My last survival run was probably my favorite playthrough of the game.

Do I really have to start another character to finish the Raider side of the Wastelanders DLC? Looks like I went Settler when I first played it. They didn't patch in something in the 3-ish years I was away to change that, did they? Tried Googling but y'know, it's useless these days. I guess it's not too bad since you can start with a lvl 20 now, but still annoying.

Also annoyed that Legendary Perks are account-wide. I was hoping to have different ones for my stealthy melee and power armor heavy loadouts.

You can earn faction favour by doing the raider daily quests that will up your reps to allow you to buy the rewards you initially 'passed' on by choosing Foundation. This works the other way had you sided with the Raiders, you can just find Ward's goddamned always-missing equipment to grind reputation.

Yeah but there's a trophy, of course, for finishing the last story quest for each side. And choosing one side locks you out of the other. I was hoping they added a way to change / undo your decision so I wouldn't have to do it all over again on a new character, but it doesn't look like it.

I'm "friendly" with both sides now so the rep grind shouldn't be too awful when I get to it.

Maybe I'm wording it wrong. Not account-wide but character-wide? Like I was hoping to have certain Legendaries on my stealthy special loadout, and then different ones on my heavy build on the same character when I switch at the punchcard station thing. Without having to manually switch them around each time and paying Perk Coins.

I'm level 111 so I only have 3 Legendary Perk slots right now. I was hoping to set 3 specific ones for my stealthy loadout, and then 3 different ones for my heavy gunner armor loadout and have them saved like the regular perk cards. But as it is, the Legendary Perks are shared across all loadouts on one character so I'd have to go in and switch them around manually each time I changed loadouts at the cardpunch station. I was hoping to avoid that but it doesn't look like I can,

Legendary Perks are something you unlock as you level up, the first LP slot opening up at level 50.
75-100-150-200-300 for the rest. A total of 6 LPs can be equipped.

Open the Pipboy, open your Perks menu. At the top is the panel for Legendary Perks, click on that.

At your level you should have 1 open slot. Click on that and chose a Legendary Perk you like.

First should be 1 of the Special Legendary Perks. Strength, Perception, one of those.

LPs cost Perk Coins to level up, you get those by scrapping normal Perk cards. Make sure to only scrap the ones you know you don't need for the next couple dozen levels until the build you currently work on is the way you want it.

Do NOT chose Charisma, it doesn't count towards perk sharing and is a waste of perk coins unless it's one of the absolutely dead last LPs you have left to level up.

And yes, it is possible to max out all LPs but that will take A LOT of levels to do.
